View Full Version : Questions about decrypting episodic Blu-Ray (Planet Earth) & splitting EPs on DVD-DL.

The case for the Planet Earth BDs just will not hold the discs properly. Every time I've opened it, at least one disc has been loose, often resulting in a disc(s) falling on the floor. It's impossible to be careful enough... I might be securing one when another just pops out!

I want to make backups now while I still can. I own and use a Playstation 3 as my Blu-Ray player so I prefer to use it to rip and playback the BD movies.

So, here are my questions:

If I rip Planet Earth, do the utilities exist yet for splitting the episodes onto individual discs without recompressing? I intend to put each on a dual-layer DVD+R (3 episodes per 25GB BD onto 3x9GB DVD+R DL).

If so, can I preserve menus like I can for DVD (to recombine episodes on a BD-R in the future)? In other words, even with only one episode per disc, I'd like the full menu that points to all episodes just so that I can recombine everything when I get a BD burner someday. I've seen plenty of guides for doing just that with DVD rips.

Can a PS3/BD player even play BD rips on different disc types? I'm sure I can't just set a book type!

If so, can a PS3/BD player play full-bitrate unmodified BD video from a DVD-DL or it there an arbitrary restriction related to the disc type? I ask because I know that playback from the hard drive is restricted to a different kind of AVC at a much lower bitrate (or something). It's similar to the situation with the PSP (native resolution FINALLY made available in recent firmware, but bitrate still restricted compared to UMD video). So, does this restriction also apply to BD rips on DVD?

Thanks!
