Hi,

Is there a way to make VCDs for the playstation (like PSone...not 2). I know there is a program called avi2str...i havent used it...but even if i did convert the file, i dont know if it would automatically play...If someone knows how to make vcds for ps1 please tell me :) thanks

Well, I don't know about the PSOne, but the original PSX you could buy a great big honking plugin adapter (pluged in at the back) and it would allow you to play VCD's. Unfortuatly... the quality sucked. The format you tried to convert to is a native PSX format for videos, I personally don't know about the quality but if you have a chipped PSX it *might* play.

Yeah i saw the chunky vcd thing (although i have only seen it on websites, not in any aussie stores...and it costs a fair bit). Yeah my psx is chipped....i still havent tried to convert any movies yet, hopefully i will try soon.

VCDSpain has an article on how to make VCDs for playstation WITHOUT a chip or any device.

That's a REALLY bad idea. Okay think about this: when you read Doom9's guides I bet you still have a little trouble understanding them, now how about if they're in a different language! I have translated the document by hand and I will post it soon.

How is the quality of those VCD's? I don't know what kind of processor a playstation has but I don't think it has one that does full (25fps pal) playback. Is the frame rate decimated through, for example a vdub filter, or not, before encoding the mpeg file?
Thanks, lexi

hopefully those questions will be answered if taric25 translates for us :)

I have final exams this week and I have very little time to use my computer for leisure. I will try to post a translation as soon as possible.

I finished my translation. It's HTML.

I'll attach it to this post. I have a lot of work to do tonight, so I'll continue this post later. Yes, I know what this guide is for. Download it anyway.

Yes, I know the guide is for PS2, but I bet if you e-mail VCD spain (in spanish) and ask for their old VCD to PSX guide, they could give it to me and I could translate it.

For us PS2 owners, has anyone tried this?

I'll try to e-mail them later today and see if they still have an old VCD2PSX guide.

VCDs can not be played on the PS2, you are basiclly re-encoding them to MPEG2. so think about it, you are streching 352x240 into 640x480. it won't look so hot. also modchips aren't popular yet for the PS2. it would be better to buy a DVD player and keep your PS2 for games.

you can play VCDs on the PSX with an adapter if your PSX has the hook-up on the back. some models do not have this and the PSOne does not. another way to do so is create a STR file (PSX movie file) and make a disc that will play it. that seemed like a good option 4 years ago, but now with DVD players being as low as 80 bucks, it really isn't worth it and is not easy at all to do.

Faceman101, do you know how to convert DVD2VCD for PSX? PSOne users might want this since portable DVD players aren't very cheap, and can't play playstation games. :)

would be interesting, if it is possible

there is an encoding program for AVI to STR, even then you would need to have a PSX exe to play the movies and such. PSX uses LBAs, they tell the exe where every file is on the cd and has to be rebuilt in that order. the nice thing about the PS2 supposed VCD movie player is that it has everything in order for you and you just run the .bat. i've tested it and it's cool if you want to show off a movie you made and encoded it into MPEG2 640x480, but to re-encode VCD to full screen is pointless.

you could obtain an already built PSX movie disc and replace the movie files on there with your own. unless you know how to program. there are programs that will keep the LBA. STRs are 352x240 and run at 15fps. it's up to you to play around, like i said it's not easy. i was more of a man who ripped the movies off of PSX discs, not put them on. IRC has channels that may still help you (about 2-3 years ago i have noticed IRC being more and more unhelpful) and there maybe some webpages left with info.

I have actually made an str file, but i dont know how to put it on a cd and make it so it plays. Any ideas?
