How do I display .srt from MKV

I need help decoding/displaying subtitles of a ripped HD-DVD.

I muxed an .srt file along the video and E-AC3 stream into a MKV file using MKVtoolnix. The .srt file was created using Pelican9's SUPread from a .sup obtained by demuxing the main subtitle stream using Pelican9's EVOdemux.

I am now trying to build a graph in graphedit to play the file and display the subtitles. I already have graphs which will play similar MKV files without subtitles as follows:

VIDEO: Haali Media Splitter -> ffdshow -> VMR9
AUDIO: Haali Media Splitter -> Nero audio Decoder 2 -> AC3filter -> Direct Sound Device
SUBTITLE: Haali Media Spitter -> (NEED CORRECT FILTER HERE) -> VMR9

I know I need a subtitle filter between Haali Media Spitter and the mixing renderer but I don't know which one to use. I've tried DirectVobSub, but without success. Can someone point me in the right direction?

How did you create your .srt file? Maybe there is something wrong with mine.

My .srt started out as a .sup file that was ripped from the HD-DVD of "Letters From Iwo Jima" and demuxed using EVOdemux. I then loaded the .sup file into SUPread and converted the .sup file to .srt which I muxed into an MKV using MKVtoolnix.

Perhaps i am doing something wrong?

That one was exported from aegisub using an ssa file that I extracted from digital satellite from the teletext using projectX

If you open it in a text editor it should look something like this:

Have you tried playing the file in VLC or MPC, both have internal subtitle decoding.

Looks OK, so i don't know why the subtitles won't display. I also verified I have the latest version of VSfilter. My OS is Vista, but I don't think that has anything to do it...although you never can be too sure.

EDIT: I discovered the problem: The times are all WRONG! When SUPread converted the SUP file to SRT, it assigned screwy time stamps for the subs. No wonder they don't display. The timestamps show the first line to be displayed 5 HOURS into the movie...on a 2 hour movie, that will never happen.

Those subtitles start at 5 hours 22 minutes in!!

Load them into aegisub (or any app you know) and sync them up.

ctrl+I in aegisub, you'll have to figure out how much to drag them back. Then go to export and untick framerate adjustment. (don't know why it defaults to do this). Then export back out as srt again.

thanks for the Aegisub recommendation. I'll try that. I also discovered SubtitleCreator will load the EDOdemux created SUP file and allow me to "shift" the subtitle times.

In the meantime, Pelican9, SUPread's author, has offered to examine the file to determine the origin of the problem. I'll keep you and the forum posted on progress.

Yes it is true (I have programmed this part of SubtitleCreator) but be careful, the saved SUP will be a DVD sup (not HD), if it's for OCR, it's OK but if you want to keep the original's quality you must keep your original SUP files also. I have one question and one suggestion

Question: When you open the SUP file in SubtitleCreator does it also display the same times? I mean starting at 5hr22. If yes, the error must be in the SUP file as I am using a different code from that of SUPRead to decode the SUP files.

Suggestion: SubtitleCreator converts the SUP files to normal PAL or NTSC definition (SD) before opening them. You can then save them as VobSub. Then you can try to directly visualize the subs with VSFilter. This will be good old DVD quality but I think it can be acceptable.

Hello Manusse,

For some reason, Subtitlecreator has stooped working on my computer. I have uninstalled and re-installed, but I keep getting a program crash on start-up. My OS is Vista 32.

Any suggestions?

It can occur sometimes with some buggy srt files. Maybe it's your problem.
To fix it, go to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\ and rename the MRU.txt file to another name. This file holds the list the Most Recently Used files. Then try to start SubtitleCreator again.
If it is working please PM me the file the name of which is at the first line of the MRU.txt, this way I can try to understand what SC doesn't like with your srt or sub file.
If you have this problem with many of your srt/sub files you can uncheck Settings->Automatically load last used subtitle file and save your Settings.
