Hello Everybody.
I recently completed my research on backing up HD-DVD content to DVD5/9.
I was successful and can reproduce the following steps:
1) Decrypting HD-DVD AACS to the hard drive.
2) Demuxing original feature .EVO
3) Frameserving demuxed .VC1 using Avisynth
4) Encoding the content to an HD-DVD compliant h264 to a filesize that will allow be to fit the entire disc on a DVD9 (The good: quality was amazing, by the way. The bad: took over 24 hours to encode).
5) Importing newly encoded .h264 + original demuxed AC3 (DD+) to Scenarist Advanced Content.
6) Authoring using Scenarist Advanced Content and producing a new .EVO + matching .MAP file.
7) Editting the XPL file on the original disc to reflect on the codec change ("VC1" --> "AVC").
After all of these steps I replaced the original .EVO/.MAP on the disc with the newly authored .EVO/.MAP to result in an HD-DVD directory of exactly 8.5gb to fit on a DVD9.
After all of this, however, the feature would not play. When it reaches the point where it needs to play my reencoded file - it gets stuck.
Endless research on the subject led me to believe the problem lies with the HVA00001.VTI file on the disc. It is my firm belief that we would not be able to backup HD-DVD in the abovementioned way until we have a way to edit the info in the VTI file (which is the HD-DVD equivalent for IFO) to match the new files.
Is anyone up for the task? I'll be happy to help in any way I can, including providing VTI/MAP files and helping with tests.
Regards,
