Is there a simple way to capture an Internet stream to harddisk or DVD?

You didn't say what type of stream herbray.
If its asf/wmv/wma, quicktime mpa/mp4 a combination of urlsnooper and the flashget downloader (do a google search for each) could have you downloading the stream to your harddrive.
Java Streams cannot be saved , neither some flash video streams if they are using the latest protocols, flash streams using the early protocols can be downloaded via flashget using urlsnooper to get the address.
This is of course for windows users.

If you don't use Windows, not all is lost either.

A quick googling located this page (http://www.theconsultant.net/archives/2005/06/12/capturing-rtsp-streams-to-file/) that seems to cover the MacOS / Linux side of things reasonably well too.

Hope this helps.

I use VLC to save streams, works very well for me.
