View Full Version : HD-DVD to DVD9: Progress!

Hello everybody.

I recently posted several threads regarding the process of backing up HD-DVD while preserving menus, subtitles, and extras by reencoding the content to h264 AVC at lower bitrates to fit a DVD9 or a DVD5.

The problem up until now was that I was unable to mux using Scenarist ACA as it would not accept my input h264 files (which were encoded using MainConcept h264 Encoder). Since then, I have found out (thanks to MSDN HD-DVD forums) that the problem was Nero's directshow filters, and as soon as I uninstalled them - everything imported into Scenarist just fine. I was able to easily import the DD+ track with my encoded h264 and produce a new .EVO + matching .MAP file to replace with the equivalent ones on the original HD-DVD.

I altered the XPL to correspond to the codec change (changed from the original on-disc VC-1 to AVC) and started PowerDVD HD with alot of hope in my eyes. Unfortunately, the title would not play. It gets stuck when reaching the clip I reencoded/reauthored.

A bit of research led me to believe that this has something to do with the content of the HVA00001.VTI located on both the original disc and my reauthored titleset from scenarist from which I took the new .EVO/.MAP.

Does anybody know what information is stored in that file and/or how we can alter it to match the new .EVO/.MAP?

If this issue is resolved I can publish a full HD-DVD backup guide.

Thanks,
-PurpleMan

Attached files:
* The original VTI file from the disc (contains info about ALL the .evo's on the disc)
* The authored one (contains info only on the 1 evo that I reauthored).

1st of all, was info about Scenarist VS Nero.
When NERO installed Scenarist work as bug-on-bug.
Info is not tested, and what version of Scenarist used i downt know.

2nd, i'm created H264 stream with SCA compilant with "Rhozet Cardon Coder". IMHO, ACA can accept these streams

3rd: omething to do with the content of the HVA00001.VTI
And in VPLST000.XPL you need to paste new attributes...

Read carefully!

I did change the XPL file for the new attributes. I think it's not playing because of the info contained in the .VTI file.

@ Purpleman, Have you tried to play a DVD-9 (HD-DVD files) on a hardware player? I have, and it simply doesn't.

DVD9 (HD-DVD files):
-plays on PCs
-plays on Xbox 360 w HD-DVD drives
-Does not play on Toshibas & LG HD-DVD players

DVD5 (HD-DVD files):
-Plays on everything I have tested it.

While looking on Toshiba's website it says that is only compatible with DVD-DL and NOT DVD+DL. Anyone, has any input?

@Toti

Hi!

Your DVD9 problem may simply be media and/or burning related.

1) Use only Verbatim DL DVD+R media, as it's the only brand that, presently, has proven to yield consistently good results

2) Use "IMGBurn" (freeware) to burn - It does a good job of establishing a viable layerbreak, which is critical to a xsuccessful DL burn.

3) If your burner has the capability, either automatically or manually, perform bitsetting. This perportedly makes the burned media appear to be a DVD-ROM instead, making it more likely that your standalone player will accept and play it...
