So recently I looked into getting a new DVD Recorder/Player, I come to find out that all new ones have a copy protection on them which means you cannot record certain channels off of TV.

The salesmen and the Company would have you believe that it's only Premium Channels and On Demand shows but from what I read on some forums is that alot of people are not even able to record there shows to watch at a later date and time on regular old channels.

Which leaves me asking. What good is a DVD Recorder? It seems totally pointless. I'm not looking to pirate anything or sell things i record. I Just want to record my shows if I'm not going to be home and it wont allow it. Just seems odd to me. What do you guys think?

I think you should look into a PVR solution like MythTV (http://mythtv.org) (Install Guide (http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/)) or FreeVO or something.

Well thank you, I'll take a look. This whole thing just seems pointless like selling you a Watch that doesn't tell you what time it is.

Edit: That's not really something I want. Plus I'm running Windows and it says it won't work with Windows
