View Full Version : Better Codec

I used to use Flask with Divx 4.11 until 2 days ago because it was easy to get 2-pass encoding to work. Now I use GKnot with the automatic 2-pass encoding and I was wondering which codec is better with respect to:
1. overall quality of a 1 CD rip
2. overall speed

Thanks for you opinion

Are you are asking what the difference is between 4.11 and 4.12?

You should be able to find a development history log on divx.com. Which outlines the changes to 4.12

I'm sorry I wasn't specific. I meant between Divx 3.11 alpha and Divx 4.11.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder at the moment (imho 3.11alpha SBC encodes are the best)... speed is roughly the same (unless you got a P4), even though they *promise* optimisations for AMD cpus. Other than that, DivX4 is a legal codec, and DivX 3.11alpha is a hack of MPEG4V3.

I did my first movie today with Gordian Knot and I must say that the automatic 2-pass encoding with 3.11 alpha is the highest quality movie I've made, and it took about half the time to encode(from Flask.6 with Divx 4.11)

for me sometimes 3.11 and sometimes 4.x produces better quality,..
But the point for 4.x is not only his legallity, but also the fact that each Mpeg-4 Simple Profile Player should be able to play it ;)
So there's still hope for a hardware player ;)
