I tested out a quick encode of "Bourne Supremacy" HD-DVD to H.264, using VirtualDub and ffdshow's h264 encoder.
(Yes, I realize that using x264 in 2 pass "High Quality Insane" gets the best results, but I have a multitude of reasons why I didn't go that route, one is that i work at home, and have only one machine)
I first tried downsizing the movie to ~ 720P resolution (black bars cropped off), and used "Constant Quality" mode set to 85. The results were passable, as good as my HD cable box at least, and the size was around 3GB - about what I expected.
Just for kicks, I wanted to see what would happen if I left it as ~ 1080p resolution (again, cropping off the black bars). I left the setting the same, CQ at 85.
The result... was also a 3GB size movie, and the quality was about the same as the 720p version (watchable).
This has left me with a giant "huh?" look on my face, and I'm just wondering, is this normal for "Constant Quality" encoding?
This movie is kind of a "dark" movie (as in the lighting) so I wonder if that played some sort of a role in it... but it shouldn't be EQUAL in size...???
