View Full Version : No audio found in SOME mpg files??

I've been using AutoGK for some time now and like it alot. However, I just installed a KWorld PCI-115 TV capture card/ArcSoft TotalMedia software and tried to compress some of the mpg files they create but AutoGK would would not find any audio files in SOME of the recordings. For mpg files recorded from standard channels, audio was found, but for SOME of the digital mpg files, the video is there but no audio. Just to be sure, I went ahead and compressed a file, and the video was compressed perfectly but there was no audio. All of these uncompressed files play fine with Windows Media Player (but some don't play with VLC Media Player).
What am I missing (and thanks in advance)???

could be the stream is corrupted
try opening those failing mpeg in dgindex and start indexing
is audio created ?
also... post a sample of those broken files

Thanks buzzqw:
DGIndex was able to open the files and produced both a d2v file and an .ac3 file, and the .ac3 file could be played by VLC media player. Thus, at least one ac3 stream is present - why isn't AutoGK seeing it? When I open some of the files in Windows Media Player, it says there are multiple audio streams - could that be confusing AutoGK (though it does fine with DVD files that have multiple audio tracks)?

Several editors had problems with these HD files (not MPEG-2?). Oddly, I just recorded a file in HQ mode (no info on what that means) and AutoGK sees an AC3 audio stream, but it was unable to find any audio in a file recorded just a minute later in SP mode (again, no info). Other files recorded in HQ mode do not seem to have a detectable audio stream.
Here is a link to a 5 second recording that has no apparent audio when opened in AutoGK.

Autogk detect audio via vstrip for ifo (dvd source) and mediainfo for other files, so could be a problem of mediainfo...
the sample you posted contain 3 audio tracks (all ac3) , with pid 09C1, 09C2 and 09C3, as you said with dgindex is possible to extract all audio (and convert to other formats)
for resolve we must trigger the use of bbsummary just rename your files from .mpeg to .ts like KQED-HD_SP.ts
doing this autogk will use bbsummary and you will see 3 audio tracks

First, bbSummary is used for both program and transport streams. Second, AutoGK parses its output based on file extention. So problem is simpler: the above file is clearly transport stream and should have extention TS (bbSummary clearly states that when parsing the file: "MPEG Transport Packets").

thanks for clarifying Len0x!

Thanks buzzqw and LenOx!
Changing the filenames to .ts worked perfectly - AutoGK now sees the three audio tracks! Regarding the 3 audio AC3 tracks in this file, would it be best to choose one and, if so, how can I tell what each of them are?
You all have been VERY helpful!

AutoGK plays audio during preview...

Thanks!
The trick of changing the files to .ts certainly allows AutoGK to see the files and recognize the audio tracks (thanks for the tips on choosing), but I encounted a new problem I've not had before. As an initial test, I picked a 60 min HDTV recording (recorded "HQ", 720p, single AC3 audio channel) and used AutoGK to compress it under two sets of conditions:
1. 100% quality, 1024 fixed width (matches my projector)
2. Fixed 350MB file size, 624 fixed width
For both the resultant avi files, the video is fine but the audio is weird - it stars out in sync with the video and then progressively looses sync over time. Thus, there is not an inherent (and constant) delay one way or the other, the audio seems to be recorded at a different (slower speed). Based on the two files, the audio must be slower than the video - for the first minute or so everything is fine, but by 2 to 3 minutes (and progressively more so thereafter), the sound is behind the video.
I've made many compressions before using AutoGK and never encountered this (I have periodically had audio tracks that were shifted, but could be realigned with programs like AVIdemux, but that program wouldn't fix these files).
Is there again something funny about the files being written by TotalMedia, or is this related to how AutoGK reads the ts files? Is there a way to "fix" these files? Should I look at other tuner-capture programs???

OK, here is a further update.
After thinking through the issue, it seemed to me that these mpg files are probably flawed/corrupt. To test this, I ran one of the problematic .mpg files through VideoReDo using the Quickstream Fix tool. VideoReDo found multiple audio and video problems with the file, and the resultant 'fixed' file is now seen just fine by AutoGK (sees a AC3 audio track). Moreover the compressed file produced by AutoGK has the correct audio sync. Same result with two other HD files I tried (the original mpg files were not read properly by AutoGK but the 'fixed' files were).
This again leaves me with several questions:
1. Is this .mpg file problem a software issue (TotalMedia3), a hardware issue (KWorld PCI-115), a combination of the two, or something else all together?
2. Is this a common problem with captured mpg files (or at least captured HD files - I've not really tested this with SD captures)?
3. Are there freeware tools that can fix such problems (i.e., repair HD mpg files)? I must say I do like the "Ad-Detective" feature of VideoReDo but my trial is running out soon.

you could try with HDTVtoMPEG2 or TsRemux (search in forum) or PVA.. but don't know if it would fix your streams

Hello !
Maybe that the Frame rates do not match ?
HD can have a lot of different Frame Rates inclusing 24 fps.
If you now did not set this in AutoGK (STRG F9) then problems like that can occur.
