Anyone seen this yet?

Sounds too good to be true. It would certainly bypass that whole offline TMPGEnc step, and 5mb/sec is fine for me since I want to capture at only half-D1 (352x480) resolution to convert a bunch of VHS tapes. I want to know how it looks compared to TMPGEnc though first.

I poked around some on other forums, and supposedly this unit also bypasses Macrovision. :D So start converting your retail VHS tapes to DVD, in real-time! w00t!!

I'd like to hear opinions though of people on this forum before I shell out $200. It's not much $$, comparatively, but still....

I've owned this box for about a month.

The ADS USB Instant DVD is a GREAT capture device. The 5mbps DVD-spec captures look amazing with no artifacts to be found...even during explosions. I'm an ex-Dazzle2 owner who got frustrated with the audio sync problems created by the junky C-Cube chip. The StreamMachine chip in the Instant DVD puts it light-years ahead of the Dazzle2 (yes, even comparing 5mbps to 8 or so on the Dazzle).

I cap with the Instant DVD and author with Movie Factory. The process is quick, inexpensive, and BEAUTIFUL!!!

In short, GREAT PRODUCT!!!

I don't think the plugin is yet available that allows direct recording to disc from MyDVD. Some people were upset that the Instant DVD is advertised (maybe even says it on the box?) to be able to do direct-to-disc/DVD recording with MyDVD.

For me, I don't want to use it in this way. I don't even use MyDVD. I use the box for CAPTURE only. Then I EDIT with Mpeg2vcr. Then I AUTHOR with Movie Factory.

I had the opportunity to test a Philips DVD-R1000. Philips have somehow been able to implement VBR in its MPEG2-recorder and the result is astonishing. I tried it on a tough water scene on its second best recording speed (average 4.5Mbps) and it temporarily increased the bitrate to 8Mbps.
Audio is recorded as DD 2ch at 384kbps on highest quality and DD 2ch 256kbps on the three lower speeds. I couldn't find any noticable differences when doing frequency analysis on the two settings. Automatic recording level is painfully low though (-12db).
No problem whatsoever playing the recorded DVD in my standalone player or in my PC DVD-player.
The price tag on the other hand sucks immensly.
