Hello everybody!
How can I insert hard subtitles (from .srt file) into an AVI without loosing video quality and keeping almost the same file size?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum
if your playing the avi on your pc just make sure subtitle and movie have the same name, open the avi with vlc, mpui etc and it will "pick up" the subs.
most of todays dvd players will do the same.

Obrigado Ricardo!

if you have let say: filme.avi and filme.srt, you dont need to do anything else, if you don´t want to loose quality by reencoding that is simpler way of doing it. VLC and MPUI are media players. If your dvd player plays avi theresa good chance it plays subtitles.
If if you feel more confortable speaking in Portuguese visit our DOOM9 Portuguese fórum.

Sorry jggimi I forgot I should speak English only - it won't happen again.
Thank you very much Ricardo. I will try that and see what happens.
In the meanwhile I started to play around with AutoGK. What do you think about it?
Since I started this thread in here I won't use the DOOM9 Portuguese forum. Next time I'll remember that.
Thanks

Autogk is a good choice, have a look at the portuguese manual that i translated that comes with AutoGk.

In order to "hard sub" the file, you would have to re-encode. That will always cause a loss of quality. The above recommendation of keeping the .srt in the same directory is a good one, or you can also mux the .srt directly into the file and save a new .mkv. That will give you a single file with subs you can switch on and off.

if your going to watch the films on dvd players that can play avi (divx/xvid) have a look at sub2divx or srt2xsub, if youre going to use subs as i do, the hability to set the subtitle position etc is a must, if youre not happy as how your AEG player displays the subs your best bet wouls be to use srt2xsub or sub2divx to mux the avi and srt onto a divx file that can be played back on all divx players the same way, AEG might display the subs a bit higher than a philips dvd player, if subtitles are important to you use the those 2 programs, no conversion will be done just muxing.
Since João said he was watching the avi on a dvd player, the mkv container is out of the question.
