As Vegas users may be aware, since the 7c release, Sony has added MPEG2 encoding in the Sony "Blu-print" MPEG2 format for Blu-ray disc authoring in Sony's $50,000 "Blu-print" disc authoring system.

The conclusion one might reach is that we can expect very high quality from this encoder. After all, if it's good enough to use with professional disc authoring tools, it has to be good enough for a motion picture release.

However, I encoded a short clip of some 30p 1080i footage and viewed the resulting clip on the workstation and it was full of tons of block artifacts. It reminded me of the days of TMPGenc back in 2000 when I was struggling to author my first SD DVD.

I also, for kicks, encoded a Windows Media 9 clip. Viewing that clip, the quality was just about indistinguishable from orginal.

So my question is this: does the Blu-print MPEG file look bad because my video card can't play it back in full quality (perhaps using a fast decode algorithm that is very poor), or is Blu-print that poor in quality compared to WMV?

I'm trying to decide which authoring system to embrace and little tests like these help me to determine feasibility and value.

What's up with the Blu-print MPEG2 quality? Bad, or just fussy about playback hardware?
