How to hard sub?

i have a video in .avi format and external subs in .srt format. may i know how to hard sub them so that the new encoded file doesnt need to load subtitles?

Tell me which friendly software to use.

One method would be to first convert the subtitles to .SSA format and then use VirtualDub or VirtualDubMOD (including their "Subtitler" filter) with your video source and an .SSA-format subtitle file...
