okay, now i bet there is a faq out there that answers this, and i'll get squashed, but hopefully i can get some help...

I have a very descent sys: amd 1800+ 512mb ddr ram, 10x dvd rom, but when i am ripping i rarely get 1x let alone 0.8x, dma is activated, any ideas how to speed that up?

You may want to try installing the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers if you're using a VIA chipset board.

If you haven't got an ASPI layer installed, installing it will make a hell of a difference. I think it comes with ForceASPI, which is Doom9's software page.

i am using xp with latest APSI and VIA drivers, I have the latest updates for the OS, I have noticed if I make the priority of smart ripper to "realtime" it speeds up a little, (up to 1.7x at times) but i have to keep the window in the front. also, it tends not to like "realtime" and crashes the system frequently... so I have tended to live with the 0.7-1.0x rip time for now

What is your motherboard revision, who makes it?
What is your CPU utilization while ripping?

Latest drivers and updates for all, even new mobo flash

today i peaked at 1.7x while ripping an ep, perhaps the dvd was dirty or had spots, i am going to monitor my rip speed more closely and compare to different DVD's..

as far as sys resources while ripping... i haven't looked, next time i rip I will watch it

I battled with this also, what finally fixed the problem for me was this....

1. My DVD-ROM was on installed on the secondary IDE so all instructions are assuming that you to are on the secondary IDE channel.

2. Go to Device Manager / Disk Controllers and remove your secondary IDE controller.

3. Reboot your computer, windows should automaticly install your new hardware.

4. Try your ripping again, should be fixed now.

For some reason the secondary IDE channel will sometimes get stuck in PIO mode, this is what causes the really slow speeds. Simply uninstalling and letting windows reinstall fixes the problem every time. Hope it help you.

Well if the secondary channel reads "Multi Word DMA 2" then you've reached your max speeds for that drive.

I bought a "12x" speed toshiba that avg 2x, just sold it and got a pioneer. My friend has an Asus drive and it rips really fast. So throw that drive of yours on eBay and upgrade.

I'll agree with the previous post. I too, much to my dismay, have
a Toshiba drive that is AWFUL at ripping (just over realtime). I bet
you have a Toshiba....
