This may be a dumb question but here goes. I do a fair amount of encoding 5.1 sources into WMA 10 Pro for Xbox 360 playback. After a computer upgrade/re-install, in Windows Media Encoder 9 series, WMA 10 Pro is not an available encoder. Only Pro 9 is listed. I know on my last machine, WMA 10 did not appear in the available codec drop down until WMP 11 was installed. However, I want the Pro 10 codec w/o having to install WMP 11 (it was very buggy bloatware). There must be a way to get a standalone version... I can play Pro 10 files without issue but encoding them is not an option. Any ideas?

:thanks:

1 - All WMA codec updates are delivered via WMP. Good luck getting the former without the latter

2 - I use WMP11 for my music library playback and management and have found it to be neither buggy nor bloated. As a matter of fact IMO it's the best music media player out there. In any case, even if you do install WMP11 you're certainly not forced to use it in any way. Just install, ensure your file associations are set as you need, and use the codecs. You'll never have to encounter WMP unless you need to.

WMP 11 is more buggy then any other player, the main feature that made me rollback to 10 was that it wants to try and open images also, and unfortunately is not made for that, and crashes on trying to open it, no complains, just don't say it's not buggy

I have not yet tried this, as I don't want to break my current setup.

Extract the WMP11 installer.

Install just the WM10 runtime (wmfdist10?... something, this can also be extracted if you want to try to manually install that mess).

Good luck.

ps. I am not responsible for any damage this might cause :p
