Does any of you know how to make Real subtitlekes or karaoke subtitles? I mean, not subtitles embeded on videos, but karaoke subtitles that we can turn on / off.
I bought a dvd with the those substitles that I am talking about, with those subtitles that I am trying to learn how to make. The man who made the dvd, told me that he uses sonic softwares, but still didn't figure out ( learned ) how to do so. As I couldn't rip and re-author that dvd, I decieded to capture a part of it, to share with all of you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V-zDRPbq4I Here, the subtitle is embeded, because I couldn't host in another way. Excuse me, yes I could. Here I hosted a chapter of the dvd: http://rapidshare.com/files/29182769/Loirinha.zip

As I have already answered you in another forum, you can find useful information in the following website (in French):
http://perso.orange.fr/sweetkaraoke/Tutoriels/Tutoriel7_1d.html

You can have google translate it in English for you:
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fperso.orange.fr%2Fsweetkaraoke%2FTutoriels%2FTutoriel7_1d.html&langpair=fr%7Cen&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

Note that to generate overlapping karaoke subtitles you will need the next version of SubtitleCreator.

Thanks for the tutorial and information, I have just tried to create some karaoke subtitles. The process itself is quite tidious but it works.
One query, though, when I press the effect from the "Karaoke editor for DVD subtitle, I get <u> and </u> instead of <k> and </k>, what's the cause?
At present the subtitles are a little jerky and look as if they are jumping out each time the screen changes, can this be improved?
And can the highlight colour comes out steadily from left to right within a word like the screen above?(I guess this is something to do with commands in the subtitle)

Thanks once again for the effort!

For the karaoke effect <k></k>, you must use method #2.

At present the subtitles are a little jerky and look as if they are jumping out each time the screen changes, can this be improved?
I think this is somehow related to the font you are using. Did you try with another font? Paddington may have an idea about how to solve this problem.

And can the highlight colour comes out steadily from left to right within a word like the screen above?
I don't really understand your point. What you call the highlight color is the color of the characters embedded within the <k></k> tags, I suppose. You can place them where you want. Please explain a little more bec. I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I will study more carefully to see the difference between the two methods.

I will try another font next time, I have used Arial this time.

I've seen karaoke subtitles with colors moving from left to right within a word, i.e. moving by pixels instead of the effect of changing the colour of the font. So you may have a letter with different colours on left and right.

Take the above screen for example, "gato" would be all white and gradually "g" gets yellow from left to right smoothly like you are sweeping with a brush while painting....

Well, after hints from someone at our local scene and some searching, I finally find out that the stl(Spruce Subtitle Format) subs can handle the job beautifully. (Compiling in DVD Maestro)

These are the links that provides more details:-

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=74519

and this is the link as provided in tha above thread:-

http://www.geocities.com/mcpoodle43/DVDMaestro/stl_format.html

This is the subtitle that I had made:-

//Font select and font size
$FontName = Arial
$FontSize = 36

//Character attributes (global)
$Bold = FALSE
$UnderLined = FALSE
$Italic = FALSE

//Position Control
$HorzAlign = Center
$VertAlign = Bottom
$XOffset = 0
$YOffset = 0

//SETWIPECOLOR
$SetWipeColor1 =0,0,255
$SetWipeColor2 =255,0,0
$SetWipeColor3 =0,0,128
$SetWipeColor4 =0,255,0

//Contrast Control
$TextContrast = 15
$Outline1Contrast = 15
$Outline2Contrast = 15
$BackgroundContrast = 0

$WipeTextContrast = 15
$WipeOutline1Contrast = 15
$WipeOutline2Contrast = 15
$WipeBackgroundContrast = 0

$ColorIndex4 = 2

$WipeTextColor = 2
$WipeOutline1Color = 3
$WipeOutline2Color = 3
$WipeBackgroundColor = 4

Also, I have some questions regarding the use of VisualSubSync which I find very useful.

The above sub is at first created with VisualSubSync from snatch and everything seems fine.

Now, I use it to adjust some subtitles and here are the issues:-

When I start VisualSubSync, the following log appears:-

Exception in french_typo.js (Line 45) / SyntaxError: invalid quantifier ?
Exception in general_plugin.js (Line 15) / SyntaxError: unterminated string literal
Can't load D:\Program Files\VisualSubSync\jsplugin\general\general_plugin.js

Each time I delete a line in the sub, the following appears:-(no matter what line, it always shows Line 45)

Exception in french_typo.js (Line 45) / SyntaxError: invalid quantifier ?

And, strangely enough, each line has turned from 1 line to 3 lines with a blank 2nd line and the third line being the line number of the subtitle, like this:-

1
00:00:28,520 --> 00:00:32,650

1

2
00:00:37,430 --> 00:00:43,070
世界上沒有幾種鳥類能像雄鷹那樣
能激起人類的豐富想像力了

2

This does not happen with English fonts!

What suggestion can you give me?
Thanks!

And if I load this in Subtitle Workshop and save again, then the lines will return to its original state.
