View Full Version : 'MP4:no supported tracks found'-What's wrong?

I'm learning to encode AVI into MP4 with MeGUI+X264. It's a match encoded with XVID from a DVD. The first time I found that it hang on 99% of mux for more than one hour so I clicked 'abort'. I can play the video (*.264) but it showed the total play time about 4:33:40 while it should be only 1:34:20. And the audio was good. I tried 'MP4 MUXER' and it finished after a few minutes. But I got this error when I played the muxed film 'Haali Media Splitter MP4:no supported tracks found.' I thought that I shouldn't have stop the mux. So I tried whole encode again. This time it took almost 3 hours to finish the last 1% of mux. And I got the above error message while I tried to play the muxed mp4.

So what could the problem be?

Is your mp4 file the size you expected it to be ?

Did you try playing your video in VLC or mplayer (a good gui for mplayer is mpui btw) ? VLC and mplayer are known to be tolerant to errors, but they also give useful info in the logs that might help track the problem. Obiously a 3 jours hang isn't normal. Could you provide a log from MeGUI (I'm not sure where to find that though, either in MeGUI's directory, or in your output directory) ? That would help diagnose the problem more easily ...

Also, a .264 file is just the raw video outside it's container (avi, mp4 and mkv are containers, just in case you ask).

Try using YAMB (which is a GUI for mp4box) to mux the audio with the video. It *might* work better (though I'm not sure if MeGUI uses mp4box already, or mp4creator).
Get YAMB here (http://kurtnoise.free.fr/index.php?dir=Yamb/installer)

DarkZell666,I do use MPC and I think it's almost as good as VLC. So it's not from the player.

MeGUI uses mp4box to mux the audio and the video. And here's the log file.

CTRL+F and look for "error", you'll see that for some reason the audio.mp4 file isn't correct, so it can't be muxed.

Here's what's relevant :

I don't use MeGUI, but I think this thread should be moved to the MPEG4 Encoding GUI's subforum anyway :)

Well,I could play the audio.mp4 file and I did mux another match with the same setting for the audio part. I should have saved the log file. I'll try another way to get the audio and try to mux it again.

I don't use MeGUI, but I think this thread should be moved to the MPEG4 Encoding GUI's subforum anyway I thought that my question was about h264. That's why I post it here. Anyway, thanks for your kind help!

You muxed another match and it worked ?
Hmmm ... it's sample-upload time then.

It'd be useful if you could upload a small clip that exhibits the problem for other people to try. Maybe you're doing something wrong without knowing about it, or you discovered a bug with one of the used softwares :p

Anyway h.264 is video-only, so anything audio related can't be too much related to h.264 if you ask me :)

DarkZell666,I do use MPC and I think it's almost as good as VLC. So it's not from the player.Haha, big mistake that is =) I should have insisted on that earlier : MPC is DirectShow based, so the rendering "graph" depends on what filters/codecs you have installed. VLC or mplayer use the ffmpeg libraries, and will always have the same "rendering path" for each file that has the same format. If that video played in VLC or mplayer, you could have actually found a bug in haali's media splitter (mind you, if mp4box already choked on the file, it's more probable that mp4box had a bug =)).

How silly am I ? What version of MeGUI are you using ? And are you sure you have haali's latest media splitter version ? (Why I didn't ask that before is beyond myself :D) I'd also suggest you get a later version of mp4box and copy it over the one that's in the MeGUI directory, just in case ...

Hey, DarkZell666, I've deleted the strange raw 264 and the wrong muxed files so I couldn't try them anymore with VLC. Anyway I'll try that next time. :)

I was using MeGUI v2.0 built 0.2.4.1020. Thought that it would keep updated itself. I just succeeded to convert another match last night. It was good except a little block. I'll try to get a sample these days.

try to demux the audio mp4 to .aac and import that .aac to the final mp4 instead of the audio mp4

Well, I got again the problem. It took almost 4 hours to mux the audio and video. And this time there's NO error at all(see the log file). And I tried VLC. It couldn't play it either and I didn't get any error information from VLC as from MPC. It just stopped itself. I'll try next time audio.aac. Pitty that the video(*.264) was already deleted after the mux.

i dont like those fragmenting messages. fragmented mp4 files are special files being more error resilient, but needing special player

try muxing in yamb and report if that works

try muxing in yamb and report if that worksI did that. It couldn't be played with MPC. I can play it with VLC but not seekable after 53 minutes. I drag it to 51 minutes and it would keep playing without sound after 53 minutes and ended at about 56 minutes. The whole match is about 1:22:58. And in MeGUI I have set the total size about 350 MB. The muxed file is only 233 MB.

Here is the log

After about 1 hour investigation, it appears the source avi file actually has a mono soundtrack, and for some reason, NDAAC and mp4box both choke on mono audio.

As a quickfix, I advised him to run mencoder over it to convert the audio to stereo before feeding it to MeGUI, as follows :

mencoder "1.avi" -ovc copy -af channels=2 -oac mp3lame -lameopts br=128:cbr -o "1fixed.avi"

Something dirty that just solved the problem in no time, but NeroAacEnc and mp4box shouldn't choke on mono stuff like that in the first place I believe ...

Edit: actually, something must be fishy here since once the mono mp3 soundtrack got encoded to aac and muxed into mp4, both vlc and mplayer reported the audio as being stereo. Go figure ...

Mplayer even reported the source mp3 soundtrack being stereo too, when gspot said it was mono ...

I'm not sure he used the same mp4box and ndaac builds I did, since I got the very latest ones, and he obviously used the ones provided via MeGUI auto update. Dunno if this issue got fixed since ...

can you guys upload a small sample of such a not working mono mp4 somewhere please

DarkZell666

Here's a sample leo-nl sent me yesterday : http://www.megaupload.com/fr/?d=14L9HC0W

If it says "file temporarily unavailable", refresh a couple of times until you get the "Enter the code" box. (I had to refresh like 15 times, once every second or so, to get it to work, rofl).

Using the latest MP4Box's build should resolve the problem...At least with the sample provided.

It seems this is true indeed ... but MeGUI's autoupdate references a build from 2006-15-11, hehe.

Thx for confirming ;)
