I've been reading some of the threads and googling what I'm after but am not having any success. I've got an mkv file and a divx file, neither of which will play on my standard external dvd player. I've tried just about every conversion method/software I could get my hands on but no joy. Part of my problem was that I was trying to do it all on a machine running on windows 98se, which none of the programs (freeware or otherwise) seemed to like. I'm now on my windows xp machine but am still having no luck. I've recently tried avi2dvd and am currently using open video converter. Both of them appeared to be willing (able?) to preview my files but seemed to run forever (over 1 hour each program trying to convert both the mkv and divx files) without actually finishinging and telling me that I had a converted file. When I manually stop both programs there is no avi file as a result.
Can anyone help me with this and give me a healthy push in the right direction PLEASE??????

ConvertXToDVD by VSO...you won't get the highest quality conversions ever, but, it does a decent job and has been able to convert every format I've thrown at it.

Hi!trouble converting mkv and divx to dvd (avi)Your post is not really clear to me since, for one thing, to "convert" a ".DIVX" file to ".AVI", you simply have to cjhange the extender of the filename to ".AVI".
On the other hand, if you're actually trying to convert the videos to DVD-compliant format (.IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs) for playback on most standalone DVD players, I'd suggest you use (freeware) DVD Flick...

Thank you both and I apologise for putting this query in the wrong section and not reading up more fully beforehand.

sorry about that. I ended up using Super which solved the majority of my problems and it's a free download. Convertxtodvd, which is supposed to be a better product, became a problem because I couldn't prove that I purchased it so I couldn't get the technical help I needed when a problem occurred.
my .mkv (x264) file converted easily using Super, but my divx file would not be acknowledged by Super so I had to use Stoik first which created a 19GB size file (from an original of 1.2GB), then Super which gave me a readable (on my standard external dvd player) avi file at 780MB. Interesting process but worked out in the end. My only query now is by divx file only plays in 4:3 and I was trying to get 16:9 widescreen viewing. Is there any way to change this?

That seems REALLY wrong!! I've never had a problem with VSO support. You don't have the original email from when you bought it? That really sucks. :(
