View Full Version : Rebuilding individual chapters?

Hi,
My apologies if this is an oft-asked question or if the answer to the question is well known and I just haven't found it, but I did search quite extensively through the forum and through the DVD-RB help pages before posting this, so please don't flame me if I'm asking something obvious
I am a registered user of DVDRemake Pro 3.6.0 and DVD Rebuilder 1.24.0 and have just created a DVD from DVDRemake Pro that is 4549MB in size, where the film itself is 4547MB in size, with 2MB of menus and no extras.
I always use DVD Rebuilder with the "Steal Space from Extras" option set to 50% as I care far less about the quality of the extras than I do about the quality of the main film. However, this film has no extras, and not enough in the form of menus for me to be able to compress the menus in say DVD-Shrink without touching the main film.
However, what it does have is 3 minutes + of closing credits, and I'm sure that if I could somehow set DVD-RB to compress just that last chapter it would fit onto a single layer disc without needing to compress any of the main film.
I know that I could do it by moving the credits chapter out to be a separate PGC in DVDRemake Pro and then linking to it from the end of the main film PGC, but I'd rather keep it all as one PGC if I can.
My question, therefore is can DVD-Rebuilder be configured to "steal space from chapters" as it does with "steal space from extras"?
If not, could I put it on the wish list for films such as this, where the output is just eeever so slightly too big for a single-layer disc?
Many thanks,
Martin Reed

If it's that close to fitting then the effect compressing has on quality will be unnoticable.
If you're really concerned though then the quickest and simplest fix would be to blank out the closing credits or any unnecessary cells with software like VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm).

Yes you can. Do the prepare, then use the preview tab and select no re-encode for all other chapters except credits.
For such a small amount I'd put it through DVD Shrink.
EDIT: Didn't see the above post.
The above would be better idea as you could end up with a more undersized DVD unless you tweak params.

Wow, that was a quick reply, thanks very much!
My question actually wasn't from a quality angle, it was more from a time saving angle, in that if as you say it's that close to fitting then the only bit I really want to process is the last chapter, with all other chapters being output exactly as they were.
I don't mind running the whole film through DVD-RB and coming back 6 hours later, but if it does have the ability to be fine-tuned so that I can process just the last chapter and I come back 30 minutes later then I will take the 30-minute option, and there have been a number of films over the years that have been this close and I have processed the whole film through DVD-RB and the result has been excellent.
Just wondering if there is another way / short cut...

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum!
Just wondering if there is another way / short cut...
bEnGaLi tHuG answered you already, here's the long version: ;)
Make sure you're running in 3-Click and Full backup mode.
Run Prepare
Under 'Settings' tick 'use new style viewer/editor', hit 'video segment editor' afterwards.
Open the feature and tick 'No Reencode' for every segment except the credits.
For the credit segment move the slider to the left until you get a "Size within Target limits" at the bottom of the window. You can use the arrows for fine tuning. (Hopefully this segment is big enough to give you the necessary reduction).
'Save and exit'
Hit 'Rebuild' in the main window -> Done.
This will run very fast, as the m2v files will be written without reencoding except the last one of course. ;)

Sorry for jumping in late.
You can save even more space (comparing to reencoding) with credits if you keep just audio and convert video to still. Of course it is only of interest if you are not interested in reading all that stuff ;)
Or if you want to keep begining of creadits, you can split the cell (in DvdReMake terminology) at the point where you had enough of that text and convert rest to still.
Can be done together with other editing in DvdReMake Pro in one go.

I use this technique a bit with the credits - you can add as many screens of credits as you like and even mux in the audio if you like. If you're worried about preprocessing, cut the whole of the credits out and do it as post processing. It will take up almost no room.

Another short cut method (with time saving) is discussed here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125754). Although this does not use DVD-RB.
