View Full Version : ac3 to wav

I have a few tracks of music only in ac3 format that I ripped from a dvd in 5.1. I got graphedit to write it to wav, but it kinda sounds like I'm playing it through a wrapping paper tube when I listen to it in stereo. It sounds much better when I turn surround on, but, I would like a nice full stereo sound when in stereo mode. Can I fix the wavs, or use a different/better filtering technique to make it sound a little more like a stereo studio recording? Avoid blaming my playback equipment. It is great for stereo listening and well configured. Please feel free to suggest search strings for this site...I've found nothing that answers this with my own search strings.
thanks

There's a ton of apps which will do this -Search for a phrase like Downmix 5.1
Foobar
Besweet/Belight/BeHappy
Tranzcode
Azid
Winamp

Thanks for the recommended search srting...500 hits...still need to look through them.
Let me clarify to see if it changes any responses.
I already have the wav, but it's thin and hollow sounding.
------------
Process used:
DVD => VOBs via DVDDecrypted
VOBs => WAV via Graphedit
Multi-file-in -> mp2splitter -> Intervideofilter -> wavdest -> wav_file_out
------------
Should I do (in Graphedit):
Multi-file-in -> mp2splitter -> dump ac3
Then run one of Pookie's suggested apps to do the conversion? Will it be better than the Intervideo filter?

DVDDecrypter can also extract the ac3 stream directly.
VOBs => WAV via Graphedit
Multi-file-in -> mp2splitter -> Intervideofilter -> wavdest -> wav_file_out
The standard way is extract the ac3 (or decoded wav) from VOB's with DGIndex (http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html).
InterVideo Filter is not free soft and only owners can check your method. I don't know if you can apply DRC or not, gain, downmix, ... or others available functions with BeLight, Azid, BeHappy, Foobar, ...

Also work.

You say "it's thin and hollow sounding" with the Intervideo filter, try other option.

Great tip when I extract audio only!

Current Intervideo filter only allows stereo downmix...all others grayed.

Intervideo filter may be the culprit. I have AVISynth, so I will try DGIndex.
thanks
