It would seem to me that your copy of Gladiator could be defective. I would return it wherever you bought it for a DIFFERENT copy ..

well you would think it was defective....but it plays in a standalone. As for smart ripper, the ripping program is not the problem. the problem is that i cannot unlock the dvd because it wont play in any of my roms. it just freezes. although the vobs that are being coppied show up as readable in smart ripper, just the other ones that are on the disc are not readable because they are locked.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Did you try different players (WinDVD, STHDVD, etc, or ever different versions of Power DVD) to unlock it?
Usually for me, STHDVD, although s***ty quality, does the trick.

yep just tried those. I always click on noaspi.exe when going into smart ripper, because if i click on the normal exe i get the blue screen of death! So it still didnt work. its odd, when smart ripper starts up it claims that the files that i try to rip are readable, some other part of the disc is locked that i dont need anyway. When i rip the vobs that i need, vob 7 gets about 20 percent done and then freezes. it always freezes right around this percent and after a minute or so of not doing anything the field that says broken blocks turns red. and i have to restart. so these vobs are all readable i dont no why it keeps freezing, im using version 2.39 of smart ripper. I have gotten the dvd to play(very slow and shittily and still ocasionally freexes) in directDVD, it sounds as thoughe the dvd is bad, but then why does it play in the standalone? please help? im really annoyed with this! thanks

All I can think of is bad hardware dvd-rom, virus or virus real-time protection is on, power mode settings, etc.

he, he...

I had had EXACTLY the same problem 3 days ago, with "Omen, Damien" (too old, don't you think?). ALL rippers - internal routines, vstrip, DVD decripter and SmartRipper - freezing exactly at the same point. WinDVD was freezing exactly at the same point also. This happened with different 3 dvd-roms of my lab. It played fine in my standalone, with a very small SKIPPING at the "unripeable" sector. So, I guess... hummm.... there is some damaged sector... All that I can do is to skip this sector while ripping the movie. So... guess what! IT WORKS!

Use sector extractor (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Files/Rippers/SectorExtractor.zip) to rip all sectors where those other rippers fails. You can get informations about these sector with SmartRipper. Using sector extractor, when you reach the "unextractable" sector, skip it, restarting the rip after this sector. For example, if the damaged sector is 500000, restart the rip from 500050. You will loose just 50 sectors, which means less than 0.1 second. It will be hard, but works fine. Good luck.

oh great...thanks alot! ah could u post another link? that one didnt work! thanks.
question: are the bad sectors due to a damaged dvd or is that a type of protection? thanks.

that link is ok for me... maybe some small problem in doom9's server, already solved. Try again.

btw: the disk is ok. Surely these bad blocks has something to do with DVD's printing process.

Mozart: How do i no which sectors to extract? cause in smart ripper it freezes at different places in the vob file. Sometimes ill get 25 % of the file and other times ill only get 20%. Then once i extract the sectors what do i do with them? thanks! BTW: When i just used sector extractor to rip the whole vob file (vob 7 and vob 8) it gives me a read error for every sector!

this is a quote of my posts in this thread (http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11688)

Using sector extractor, when I had reached the "unextractable" sector, an error message popped-ups, telling me the exact number of this sector. After this, I restarted the ripping process from the next nearest "good" sector, just typping its number into the "star LBA" box, and typping into the "length (sectors)" box the right number of sectors to be ripped. As I said before, sector extractor is a very good tool when we know how to do what we need to do. It cannot help newbies

Try DVD Decryptor also. If these not help, then there is nothing to do. Just forget about.
