I have some French original films without subtitles in English. Does anybody know how any player which can display extra dvd subtitles. I already have found the subs and I have a subtitle workshop which allows me to change them from divx to dvd format, but I cannot find any suitable player.

Many thanks

Hi!

To the best of my knowledge, there is no player with that capability. You would have to go through a rather complex scenario to actually deconstruct the DVD's video and audio components, add the subtitles, and then reconstruct the DVD...

Subtitle Workshop can't create "DVD Subtitles Format" (idx/sub or sup).
You didn't specified in what format are the "original films" and the english subtitles.
In any case, if you have the english subtitles in text format (srt for example), you can open the movie with Media Player Classic and with Ctrl+L to load the desired text subtitle.

enjoy,

If I understand you correctly, DVDSubber (http://dvdsubber.com) is what you are looking for.
Best,

As some stated here, you'll have to reconstruct the DVD from scratch, which is not an easy task, and may require a (rather expensive) DVD authoring software that supports subs if you want them to be switchable on/off

I would recommend you convert your DVD to DivX (Home Theater Profile), and put the subtitle in the same directory as the AVI file with names being the same.
Example: if your DivX movie is "French.avi", your subtitle will be "French.srt" if it is an SRT subtitle.
And then you get a DivX capable DVD player for 50 bucks, and sell your old one in ebay ;)
I recommend LG models.

KMPlayer can overlay external subtitle(srt, ssa) while playing DVD. Also a Chinese guy developed a plugin which allows powerDVD to show srts.

Thanks again to you all, especially to HAMLETIII, the KMP player works even with divx subtitles, no need to edit them to .sub or .ssa. These Chinese dudes are amazing....

Thanks,

Kmplayer is actually Korean and has been accused of violating the GPL by Gabest, the author of MPC.
