I got new jvc minidv digital vid cam for xmas, and i want to take the video from it and make some svcds, maybe even with menus. What firewire card should i get based on your guys experience, i got a kw-582v2 but its not working in XP. Now once i have that working I want to find the best solution for the process for pulling the video off and creating svcds out of it. I am plenty familiar with dvd2svcd, I've been using it sucessesfully for some time now. Figured I could get the best answer to this problem from some of you guys since you probably already went through it.
Thanks

I'm looking for a solution as you but I haven't found any good solution yet after a long experiment. The SVCD's I created still have noise around the subject although I've already applied noise filters to them and encoded them with maximum SVCD bitrate. I read somewhere in the forum (http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12683) that DV avi have more noise than analog captured avi. May be I have to go back to analog capture then. (http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11567 mentioned about the chroma noise filter but I haven't tried yet)

ah hell now you mention it kw-582v2 doesn't work under XP. I just ordered it for $22 from newegg the other day. DVD2SVCD will support AVI2SVCD for DV avi file input. Should be released shortly. (http://212.88.77.140/Readme.txt)

Yeah, i ordered it from newegg.com too. Tried email and phone support to get it working with XP. They say it works with the default drivers but i got lots of weird errors on installation. Going to try a SIIG card next.

my friend has the SIIG and it works with XP. But if mine has problems (the one I ordered) I'm going to compusa or bestbuy and picking up the ADS Pyro one for $50.

I'm gonna test it in a couple of hours when I get home

ok I put in my $22 newegg 1394 pci DV card and voila...works like a charm and controls my 1996 Panasonic DV camcorder I bought in Japan. It comes with Ulead Video 5.0 so I totally recommend this one. Works under XP for me just fine. Hope you didn't try install DirectX8 that comes on the cd. This is like when I bought my shielded component cables from best buy for $30..they also had monster cables for like $89. Guess which ones a cheapskate like me bought?

I'm using winxp pro, amd 1700 xp with shuttle via kt266a chipset. I caputure it on a 5400rpm 40GB and it has 0 dropped frames. ON the cd I hope you didn't install ANYTHING at all (quicktime, media player, directx, etc.) since they're all way too old programs. Only VideoStudio 5.0 is what you need. I called in sick today (woke up at 2pm) so for the next 6 or so hours I'm going to do video capturing and benchmarks, etc.
