Hi,
I don't usually post when stuck, I normally figure out the answer, but am a little out of depth in this case.

I have a .AVI file witch the audio is supposed to be encoded in AC3 but isn't recognised by my DVD player. I cannot figure out how to fix this as other files of the same type play perfectly.

Do you think the audio has been badly encoded? it plays fine in VLC player.

Is there a way for taking the audio off the file completely then re-encoding it back to AC3? I know there is but cannot figure it out. Will it make a difference or will it still be unplayable for some reason?

I have just d/l VirtualDubMod and can see the stream description. AVI Audio Stream 1 [tag 0x2000. ATSC/A-52 (dolby AC3)]. Witch is an identical description of a file that DOES work on my DVD player.

I am clueless and sorry to ask such a question. I have searched but kind of overwhelmed by the results, I have head ache now, lol.

Please help. In the mean time, I will continue to read through the search results.

Thanks, D!

Hi!

Load the file into GSpot and post a screen capture back here...

I'm afraid I can't help you regarding the video, "Stargate SG-1 [6x10] Cure. avi".

You might want to RE-read the Forum Rules (particularly #6), as well as the "Announcement" at the top of the "Newbies" sub-forum...

Of course, if you own the commercial DVD, you can always just re-rip it.

You can try to remux the file; there are several tools for this.

A good one is avidemux. Load the file, select audio and video "copy" and avi as output.

If it still does not work, try again with reencoding the ac3. Select aften as audio codec and set the same bitrate as the original, it will reencode it. Don't touch the video, keep it as "copy".

Avidemux is is here:
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

You can also find the latest windows devel version here (the devel version is nice as it includes the latest codec versions, if you experience any bugs go back to the stable one):

Hi,
I see your concern, but they r mine. I am a bit annoyed as well at the accusation with out asking first, but ohh well.

I cannot find my Stargate originals that's why I wanted to put my back ups on disk but its messed up. Some of them work and some don't and I have no idea why. There supposed to be all the same though obviously there not. (re ripping it is not an option unless i find them).

Thanks Bigmango for your suggestions, I will try them ASAP and let you know how it goes.

@ Bigmango,

No joy I'm afraid. The whole file was distorted and choppy, as if the DVD was badly scratched. I'm trying just re encoding the audio as you suggested but it didn't seem to do anything. Unless it takes hardly any time at all to "aften" the file.

Also, do I unpack the "packed bitstream"?

Divx with ac3 should be no problem...

Have you tried the stable avidemux 2.3+ if the 2.4 devel did not work ?

You can also try to demux the video and the audio and then play each separately to see if they work. And later remux them, or try to reencode the audio alone...

To save only the video : menu/file/save/save video
To save the audio : menu/audio/(select maintrack if needed)/save

Hi,
I'm using avidemux 2.3+. I have tried many times and still the same result. The picture and sound are distorted.

I will try and separate the audio from the file and use VD to put them back together and see if that does it.

You can also try the devel 2.4 version. It includes the latest versions of the codecs.

Another thing to try out would be a tool like divfix or avifix, it will check your file and correct any errors it will find.

Tried 2.4 and got the same results.

Trying the Div/Avi fix programs now. Avifix found allot of errors and aparently fixed them, we'll see.
