Suppose I'm only interested in storing on a hard drive. Is it possible to author a DVD with say 50 or 100 GB?

You might want to try using the "Custom" size setting in "Flick DVD Creator" (Freeware)...

9GB is the limit for any title, also the limit for a set of titles. But there can be 99 titlesets, so 891GB is the limit. The LBA addressing supports 4 billion sectors, or 8192GB, so that is ok too. MuxMan and many other authoring programs impose no limit on the total size.
