Hi

Im currently converting my dvds to xvid to use with the awesome nslu2. How come you cant select 720x576 for pal and 720x480 for ntsc in the output resolution? I want if possible to keep them all at their native dvd resolution.

I can only select 704x384 for pal and something similar for ntsc, if i try to up the solution it goes to 736x416. Is there any way to acheive the same resolution or does it not matter?

Thanks John

Hello and welcome to the forum,

If you want to keep the original resolution, then tick 1:1 rather than 4:3 or 16:9 under Input Pixel Aspect Ratio in the Resolution Tab. Also make sure that the W-Module is set for 16. You should probably also edit the .avs to remove the crop and resize lines before sending to the encoder.

But the real question is why you want to keep it at 720x576/480. Do you plan on having your player do the resizing?

Thanks and thanks for the reply, I was under the impression keeping the same resolution would be the best quality, is it better to select 16/9 and 4/3 and if so what is the best resolution for a standard 16/9 television. I use XBMC usually for my movies if thats significant

Hi-

It's best to select the correct DAR, whether 16:9 or 4:3. You can get that information when creating the D2V in DGIndex. The information window will have it at the top. There is no best resolution. Or rather, the best resolution is the one that gives you the best quality given the other factors that come into play, such as the file size you're allowing for the encode, and the compressibility of the video. The compression test will help you determine the best resolution for that movie and that file size.

As for why you might not want to keep the original 720x576/480, have a look at the 2 pics in this post:

So am i right in asuming that even tho the input resolution is 720x576 on the vobs a dvd player would rescale them? hence gordian knot giving different pixels ratios to acheive 16/9?

hey dude i just read your sticky on aspect ratios and resolutions and you answer my last Q. The vobs are stored in the wrong aspect and resized by the dvd :-) So im gonna stop trying to maintain the resolution and let dvd2avi/avisynth and gordian do its thing
