Is there any such thing as a $50~$75 player that can play avi and xvid files? I successfully backed up my videos to xvid using AutoGK. I personally use my computer for watching and viewing the videos, but I need something cheap I can use for the kids so I don't have to convert back to DVD format every time I burn them a video.

Players in that price range are available in every electronics store.
I recommend LG. A cousin of mine has one, it accepts many formats including XviD and seems to be of good quality.

Click on "Manual" (to the right) to download a PDF version of the manual. It includes all restrictions you have to meet.

For example, the model that my cousin has, the DNX190H, has the following restrictions for AVI files:
720x576 resolution max
30fps max
Filename of 56 letters max
1-point GMC max
Supported subtitles: SRT, SMI, SSA, SubViewer's or MicroDVD's SUB
Supported video codecs: DivX3 and above, XviD, MP43, 3ivX
Supported audio codecs: MP3, AC3, WMA, DTS
