I have a Plextor PX-716A burner that is giving really bad DVD burns. It seems to burn CDs with no problems and will play DVD movies, games, etc... no problem. When I burn DVDs they end up with major blockiness throughout the playback plus it will stop showing video from time to time while the soundtrack plays on.I am using Verbatim 16Xs, playing them back in my computer and my Samsung/Toshiba burner burns the same media perfectly. I must mention that the Plextor burned perfectly before the tray was accidently bumped (quite hard) while it was open.

Hi!I must mention that the Plextor burned perfectly before the tray was accidently bumped (quite hard) while it was open.I'd guess that the DVD burn laser (Many burners have two laser - one for CDs and one for DVDs) was knocked out of alignment.

Considering the ridiculously low proices, you might just buy a new butrner...

Exactly what I was thinking. Is it possible to re-align the laser, and if so, how?

:thanks:

As I said previously, considering the ridiculously low prices, you might just buy a new burner - as properly re-aligning a laser lens (if at all possible) undoubtedly requires specific knowledge and measurement tools, or a manufacturer provider technician's disc...

You can diagnose (http://www.plextor.com/english/support/faqs/HW00008.htm) it...

I wonder if a test using ONLY a blank CD would yield any information regarding a DVD-only problem...

Just finished running the test. According to the instructions the drive is performing properly. Will burn a disc and report back soon.

:thanks:

Yes, I know, but at least he was able to DO something. If the test failed, he would have known for sure.

Now again it could be anything - burn speed, the media (I have a Plextor and it's VERY picky even about good media. In the past, it was "if nothing can't read, Plextor drive can". But now, I doubt it's still true... based on my experience).

And of course, it's possible the DVD laser is worn out (I've also seen this happen in Plextors).
