Weird thing, all WMV and ASF files don't seem to work for me with MPC version 6.4.8.7 and 6.4.9.0. When i try to open i immediately get "cannot render file" massage.
With 6.4.8.7 it seems to work when i uncheck the "use WM ASF Reader for WM files" in the 'tweaks' menu, but then i can only hear with no picture. With 6.4.9.0 unchecking it doesn't help at all.

I downgraded to 6.4.8.4 and it works great with this version, which is okay ,except it doesn't have some features i need from the more progress versions. I don't think it's a missing codec thing because i tried using 6.4.9.0 on a freshly installed XP (same computer) with nothing installed except ffdshow and directX9c and it works great there.
any ideas what's going on?

Wouldn't that prove that the player is OK and something is wrong with the WM codecs on your machine?

I said it's not a MISSING codec thing, it could still be a defected codec thing :P .
but then, why does it work with previous versions (and all other players I've tried, thought i should mention)?
i tried reinstalling windows media player and also someone told me to run SFC to restore defected files but it didn't work.
any other suggestions are welcomed.

Can you play back a WMV with GraphEdit?

Yeah, there's definitely something wrong with more than just MPC. You've already tried reinstalling WMP? Which WMP version did you install?
