View Full Version : Payback HD-DVD exhibiting curious behavior

All,

I successfully backed up my copy of Payback HD-DVD using AnyDVDHD and noticed a few things that are different from my other HD-DVDs.

First of all the main feature is encoded in MPEG4 AVC, whereas the majority of my HD-DVD discs are in VC1.

Secondly, the Un-encrypted movie (either form hard drive or direct from disc using AnyDVDHD) WILL NOT PLAY on my non-HDCP nVidia 7600GT via DVI, but will will play on the machine using the lowly 7300LE via VGA!

Does this have something to do with the MPEG4 AVC encode? It appears to be the only difference from my other HD-DVDs. Moreover, the lead in and trailers on the disc are encoded in VC1 and seem to play fine either through DVI or VGA.

Both of my machines are identical save for the video cards. My equipment is E6300 Core 2 Duo 1gb ram, WinXP OS. My software player is PowerDVD 7.3.

Blutach, if this is the wrong forum please move to the appropriate area. At this time, I don't know if the issue is a decrypting problem or a software player problem.

what do you mean by "will not play" ? you get an unsupported device error or you just get black screen ?

I am supposed to get this HDDVD soon so I will be able to tell you the status

Momotte,

I get black screen when trying to play the main feature, but only when using the DVI output of my non-HDCP 7600GT video card. The fact that I don't get an error message is one reason why I suspect the MPEG4 AVC encode.

If you use VGA or have a video card with HDCP digital output you should be OK.

Try using a different player. Mainstream commercial players are very often not the best thing to use for decrypted streams. Try VLC.

OK, it looks like I was able to solve the problem.

I uninstalled PowerDVD 7.3, THOROUGHLY purged the registry of Cyberlink and PowerDVD references and then re-installed.

Everything seems to work and Payback HD-DVD plays fine now.

@JJesusfreak01, I also believe many commercial players are "buggy" and will try VLC over the next few weeks, though I was unaware that VLC could play HD-DVD discs and Files.

For Non-HD-DVD discs and files, I use Zoom Player which has been great for me.

Regards.

I have the same issue with PowerDVD 7.3 and The Mummy (EUR). I'm trying what you did at the moment. I'll report back later.

edit: It didn't work, I'm stuck with a rightly bought but useless HDDVD, thx cyberlink...
Edit2 : Redid everything again and it works, PDVD is such a pain...
