A couple of days ago I noticed that I could burn VCDs with Nero and view them in my regular DVD-player. Since then I've been trying to convert my avi's to mpeg (using TMPGenc) so I can burn more, but i don't seem do get the settings right, cause it doesn't work.
Can anyone help me?

make sure you are making standard video-cd mpgs, not system mpgs....try and use a pre-made template (you should get them with tmpgenc).

I've tried one template (standard ntsc template) and what I want to know is what the difference is between the different templates? What is "1246 kbps"? What is "NTSCFilm" as compared to "NTSC"?
Thanks so much, Karl.

The 1246kbps is supposed to be an "illegal NTSC" (that's what the template says). The video bitrate is changed to 1246 from the Video CD Standard 1150kbps. Some VCD authoring packages look for the 1150 bitrate some "may" not.
NTSCFilm is where everything is same as standard NTSC except the frame rate is changed to 24fps(23.976).
If you wish to be on the safer side stick to the standard NTSC, but if you are ready for adventure and experiment, do not hesitate to try out these formats.

...higher bitrate means what? Better quality?
Isn't less framerate = lower quality?

Higher Bitrate perhaps leads to higher quality, thats what I believe. I am not sure, as I have not tried it out.
As for frame rate, 24 fps does not mean Lower quality. All films are made with 24fps and to adapt it to TV (29.97fps) it goes thru a process of Telecine. You could perhaps use the NTSCFilm format if your source is 24 fps. NTSCFilm is a VCD accepted standard.
