View Full Version : Do I need a special Xvid x64 build?

I have Windows XP 64 and I'm having problems with VirtualDub and Koepi's Xvid binary.

When I have installed Koepi's Xvid binary and try to open an xvid file VirtualDub or nandub I get an error saying

"Couldn't Locate Decompressor for formal 'xvid' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecx, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes. You need a 64-bit build of XviD like celtic_druid's (http://tirnanog.fate.jp/mirror/XviD/). Koepi's won't work with x64, because it's only 32-bit. Else, you need to use a 32-bit VirtualDub build for the Koepi's build to work.

Thanks for the reply. I installed the 64bit version from the website you suggested but I still am getting the same error message.

I've also tried the 32bit version of VirtualDub and get the same message as well...

I ran GSpot to look at the Codecs installed and this is what it reported about Xvid

- - Type VFW
- - Function Decoder
DSH 4CC XVID
DSH Friendly Name XviD MPEG-4 Codec
DSH DirectShow CLSID CLSID_AVIDec {CF49D4E0-1115-11CE-B03A-0020AF0BA770}
REG Driver File C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvidvfw.dll
REG Merit 0x00200000
VFW Name XVID
VFW Description XviD MPEG-4 Codec

Anyone notice anything odd?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have ffdshow also installed? If so, you need to go into Video decoder configuration -> Codecs. Then you need to set the decoder against XviD to libavcodec or XviD. I suspect you have that disabled.

My installer installs both 32 and 64bit builds. Tested fine here under XP x64 when I put it together. Guess it is possible that you have corrupt vidc entries? Does it show up on the codec list in VDub?

NanDub is 32bit only so that should have worked with Koepi's build before you installed mine.

One thing though you have xvid in lower case. The 4cc should be XVID in CAPS.
