View Full Version : Here's a scan of the bottoms of my DVD-R's. What's wrong?

I am currently using Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's to burn whatever I have to burn, as I know they are good quality, and to maybe help a problem I've been having. But even after buying those top quality DVD-R's, I am still having this problem.
Here is a scan of the last 3 DVD's I've burned (they are all the exact same data that was burned, an ISO of a DVD if you care)
http://members.aol.com/filesftp/dvdr.jpg
As you can see in the first one, it looks like a good, normal burn. The last two are ugly, ugly burns, with completely totally different levels of dye colors all around. It almost looks like the inside of a tree stump so you can count the rings to see how old a tree is. It's really aggrivating the hell out of me because ALL three DVD-R's are from the same Taiyo Yuden batch, all three were burned at the same speed, and all three were burned using Nero. The only difference one is the good looking DVD (top) was burned a few days ago. (However that is irrelevant I think as I didn't do anything to my PC since then)
I've been trying different brands and they all do this. Getting a good looking burn like the top one is completely a crap shoot. I've tried different brands, different burning programs, different speeds, different types of files. The only differences I see are I either get a perfect one (top in scan) or if I start changing things around like burn speeds or programs, the ugly ass rings will just be in different spots (like you can see, the rings aren't identical in the middle and bottom DVD's).
I even tried unplugging two of my hard drives in case a bad power supply was doing this. But I have a high quality 600 watt one, but tried it anyway. Did not help.
I have a Pioneer 111D. I am ripping my hair out here, and would appreciate any help big time. My PC is a Windows XP machine with a p4 2.4 and 2gigs of ram.
Thanks in advance..

You might want to try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...

i think burn rings are something that can occur on dvd-r's maybe due to burn speed changes during the burn. If their not affecting playability I wouldn't worry. Try some +r media (I've never seen rings on +r's)

burn times and write rates look good
but your firmware looks like a first release
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2220
go for the 8.29
boot into safe mode after extracting and flash the empty drive
try a burn at 8x?

Burned at 8x with 8.29 firmware. Same thing.
Can this be a power related problem? PSU overloaded maybe?

It's certainly possible that your DVD burner drive is failing.

It is also possible that you need not worry about it....
If I am not mistaken, Pioneer uses this specific strategy, something called ZCAV(zone something something, don't quote me!). Watch the progress in IMGBURN, the first minute or two, it won't burn beyond 6x....then possibly at that(burn) mark, the speed starts to climb to whatever speed you have chosen...8x, 10x, 12x.

You may confirm what I said by reading the disk through Nero's CDspeed...

You haven't stated whether they playback properly or not...

I would check the media with Nero CD-DVD Speed, tab ScanDisk, if it really is 100% readable:

I found some more information about these rings:

Quotes::thanks:
Using AnyDVD/CloneDVD with Taiyo Yuden TYG02 DVD-R media have burned numerous (over 75) DVD backup copies and NONE of my backup copies have any “ring burns on the bottom of the disc”.
I was able to get rings one time when I burned a TY +R 8x media on my 111L at 12X by mistake. Possibly you are burning at MAX settings?
It depends on the media chosen and the write-strategy used, such as CLV, ZCLV, CAV or PCAV.
As I have stated I have burned close to 100 DVDs and absolutely NONE of my Taiyo Yuden TYG02 DVD-R media have “ring burns on the bottom of the disc”.

I actually think I fixed it.
I noticed my hard drive making the noise like it was turning on and off, and my PC froze. I moved around the molex connectors all around my PC, and the rings no longer appear. It must have been a power failure related problem?

Congratulations on resolving your dilemma!
However, I'm still curious to know if the "ringed" DVDs play properly...
