Hi,
I wanna to rebuild a DVD using dvd lab pro. I ripped the movie. But when I open it, I receive a message saying that is opened gop in file. Iīve heard to do is I have to re-encoder the .m2v file. I did it using TMPEGENC 4. I didn,t like the final result. I noticed interlaced artifacts on final video. And my source .m2v is interlaced too, but I didīt get the same result. Any sugestion ?
I want to use closed gop, because I will replicate this dvd.

There's nothing wrong with having Open GOPs. About the only time you should have closed GOPs is if you're planning on editing the video, or perhaps are planning on making an multi-angle DVD. DVDLab Pro is just warning you, but I believe you can go ahead and author it. That's about all I use in my encoding, is Open GOPs.

Tks manono,
Like you said, closed gops are only necessary if you wanna edit the video. And I think that you right. But did you already replicate any dvd with open gops ? One of the requests from the replicate people is that my video must be closed gop. So I became afraid that 10,000 DVD could go to the trash can. :(
And do you know if frame index (DVD-lab pro) can really solve all problems when we use chapter in a open gop mpeg ?
Tks again, manono.

Hi-
But did you already replicate any dvd with open gops ?
As in having them commercially pressed? Nope, not I. I'm strictly an amateur hobbiest. But like I said, I use Open GOPs almost entirely.
I didn't understand the second question, but I don't use DVDLab Pro either. Perhaps someone else can help.

open GOP is DVD compliant. your replicator is talking crap (and you can tell them i said that :))
the only time closed GOP is required in DVD is when you're authoring multiangle (or anything that goes inside a multiangle VTS).
though closed GOP is a good thing to maintain in a DVD workflow, it's only a good thing because it allows segment re-encoding and splicing and whatnot. they can also be useful on chapter points. but even if you do fancy editing, it wont break compliancy, it'll just give you corrupt blocks on the first 2 b-frames of a gop on an edit - they'll be wrong, but they'll still be DVD compliant.
i think in this case the benefit of closed GOP is outweighed by the need to re-encode. but you should try to keep things in closed GOPs in future simply because of the flexibility it offers in authoring.
if you're worried about having to do a run of 10,000, then just ask the replicator for test discs before you go ahead with the big run. it doesn't cost that much extra to get the test discs, and will save you tens of thousands if you do actually spot a problem on a test disc. try them out on all the players you can find, with an emphasis on Pioneer players, as they tend to adhere to the specs more strictly than others (and hence will be the first to fail on even a good disc :))
