O.k. I have tried to get the answer to this on my own, but have come up empty. So if the answer is obvious, I appologize, I obviously didn't search right (as sometimes happens).

Anyway, I just and HDTV. I also have some 16:9 DIVX video. Of course what I want to do is take the 16:9 DIVX video (PAL HD btw) and burn to a regualar dvd, but with the 16:9 flag turned on so I don't get a really small letterboxed image in the middle of the set. I know I can't burn HD quality as I only have a DL burner and a regular DVD player. But shouldn't I be able to turn "on" the 16:9 flag for a DVD? I've tried a few things, but Premiere Pro chokes on DIVX, and I am unlucky enough to have to be running this on Vista.

Any hints?

I don't mind if quality goes down somewhat since I am downgrading the image anyway, but filling that screen would be very nice.

Thanks

Hi!

You might want to try the very impressive (freeware) "Flick DVD Creator" package...

Well I got DVD Flick and it is a nice piece of software. Simple and easy for what I want.

The problem is that it didn't work. I still get a letterboxed 16:9 image inside a 4:3 section of my TV. For some reason the flag is being read as as 4:3 instead of 16:9!!! Even though I set it to 16:9. It runs fine on my PC, but then everything does since the PC will simply strip off any "empty" areas.

Could it be my player? It is a Sony, and it seems to deal well with most things. In fact when I start it up, it runs a 16:9 startup screen.

This is driving me nuts.

Oh, BTW -
For sale - Several coasters.

I also have some 16:9 DIVX video.

Are you sure it isn't 1:1?

Hi Schmell,

Welcome to Doom9 :)

Excuse me for asking obvious questions, but firstly is your DVD set to output widescreen and not 4:3 letterbox. It's just that you mentioned "I still get a letterboxed 16:9 image inside a 4:3 section of my TV" To view correctly your entire screen needs to be used and that is most likely going to be down to your DVD and/or TV settings.

I may be completely off the mark here, In which case please tell us your full process in depth and we'll see if we can help.

DOH!

It was deep in my DVD player menus. Deep.

Since the DVD automatically switched to 16:9 for the splash screen I thought it would just do the same.

So I had to dig down about 4 levels to an obscure section and turn things on.

Pain in the butt.

But it worked! Once again Doom9 saves the day...

The problem is that it didn't work. So, now that you've adjusted your standalone player's settings - did "Flick DVD Creator", in fact, create the desired DVD format?
