View Full Version : A particular website doesn't come, all others do. Why?

Hi

I am member of a small number of fora (like AMD users forum, Travel-related fora, DVD-review fora etc) and found out that one particular site has recently started showing a timeout owing to the site taking too long to respond.

The site itself probably isn't down, because my mailbox continues to receive posts in the threads I have been subscribed to. But clicking the reply links produces a timeout.

I have initially considered that I may have been ousted from the Forum (although I don't have the faintest why), but then the site itself should come, and inform me I am not allowed to go into the members' area - so that is out. Moreover, such a thing would be informed to me by an eMail, wouldn't it?

Can you PROs solve this riddle?

Regards.

Without knowing your hardware, OS, connection type..etc....
Looking thru the magic ball:
1.Your provider is blacklisted by forum software.
2.Your host file is corrupted.
3.Your dns queries are not resolved.
4.Your router is misconfigured (NAT?).

Try to ping the forum with the real IP adress.
Do a dns lookup to resolve the IP adress.

Only guesses...

Cheers

@ukb008

Hi!

It might help if you posted the website's address...

Hello

Thanks for the responses.

I've checked in a computer away from home...the site is OK and I can log in just fine.

It's possible some creep at my ISP is doing this, because I've complained about speeds of my broadband. I spend a lot of time chatting with other members in the forum. I asked my ISP, but they said 'no'.

Can they do it (scientifically)? Is there anything I can do (scientifically) that will circumvent this?

I think my hostfile is OK.

Did you try the steps mentioned in my post?
Are there any plugins for your Firefox browser interfering?
Maybe AdBlock, NoScript, etc...?
How to ping a provider or website:
WinXP: Start/Run-> Type cmd -> at the Dos Prompt type:
ping (www.doom9.org) or (www.whateveryoulike.com)
In your hosts file there should be normaly only one activated entry:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Hi, Taurus

I tried to ping as you've advised. It says:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss).

I've made no changes in Firefox's native advertisement blocking program. I don't think it's any plugins for Firefox interfering.

And, indeed, the entry in my hostfile is as you have written

Regards.

So your ISP is blocking/blackmailing the adress.
Try with a webproxy (use google to find one) to mascerade your ip:cool:
Good luck
