Check your PM.

Thermal Zone info:

I am not sure, but Pentium 4 processors, especially those with Prescott core, are known to be running quite hot, I would say 60C is less than common (under 100% load).
(56C example with an aftermarket cooler, Zalman; 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 Prescott:

If you still have a stock cooler and it can't sustain the load (the temperature is high and/or the PC is crashing/freezing/rebooting), you might consider having it replaced with a better cooler.

If you know, how many watts is your PSU (power supply unit) rated at? One of many possibilities might also be a weak PSU, the P4 Prescott CPUs are "power hungry beasts" :)

Dunno about your temps, but if you're interested in benchmarking your machine against others to see where it falls speedwise, check out a this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=122318) thread. There is a datapoint for a 3 GHz P4 Prescott. Download the test file and let us know (in that thread) what your numbers are.
