View Full Version : british sitcom dvd...spaced. pal format?
brendan is dead
29th March 2007, 19:45
i tried to make a backup but can't.
i used the most current version of ripit4me with dvd decrypter but i keep getting errors. i would post the errors, but it was on my girlfriend's laptop and she's not here.
i'm assuming that it has something to do with the region? or the fact that it's pal or whatever format.
is there a way to rip it onto our harddisk?

Hi!
You've not provided sufficient information for anyone to give you any meaningful suggestions. Post here again when you are able to provide the "RipIt4Me" and DVD Decrypter logs that list the specific errors.i'm assuming that it has something to do with the region? or the fact that it's pal or whatever format. This shouldn't have any bearing on the ability to rip the DVD but, out of curiosity, what Region are you in? What is the Title of the DVD?
brendan is dead
29th March 2007, 20:06
ah, yes. i figured i would need the error codes and the like.
the dvd is called "spaced" it's a british sitcom made by simon pegg
i really don't know much about regions and stuff...as you can probably tell. i'm in america, though, and the dvd is from england.
i don't have a dvd player that can play it, so i was hoping to be able to put it on my mediagate thing.
at least i've learned that the region shouldn't matter.

at least i've learned that the region shouldn't matterThat's correct regarding the ability to rip the DVD.
However, the Region 2 DVD is undoubtedly in PAL format - and that MAY present a playback problem on your "mediagate thing" (I'm not familiar with it. It may be limited to playing only NTSC format).

Just FYI, many - I'd go so far as to say most - standalone players and DVD drives can be hacked to ignore region coding. How it's done depends entirely on the player.

This is quite an old programme and certainly the discs originally released showed no protection. However, Spaced was on Channel 4, and all of their current releases uses the latest protection - perhaps this has been re-issued recently.

Hey,
i happen to have bought this dvd recently, and i'm having the same problems that brendan is dead is having, it seems. I'll try to post as much information as i can, hopefully someone can clarify the situation.
dvd decrypter log (doesn't appear to show the error specifics):

when I start the decryption/copying process in dvd decrypter,
i get these popups (in order):

after clicking retry each time. they end up going round and beginning again, i think.
if i click cancel, it seems to switch to a different decryption method, but that fails as well, giving the error message:
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h25/Warywolf/error5.png
all settings in dvd decrypter are at their defaults.
i'll download ripit4me and post the logs from that in a moment.
EDIT: seems that ripit4me is giving me the same errors (understandable since it's just a frontend for dvd decrypter)

Hi!understandable since it's just a frontend for dvd decrypterThis is incorrect. If you watch the activities as they are performed (or read the generated logs), you'll realize that "RipIt4Me" is very much a truly functioning program, performing analyses and modifications both before and after calling DVD Decrypter...
Are you guys trying to rip these Region2 DVDs on drives that are set to Region 1? if so, and you don't want to lose two "changes" on the drive, set DVD Decrypter to "Brute force" mode.
This DVD, from Studio: Channel 4 DVD with a DVD Release Date: 14 Aug 2006, although fairly recent, likely doesn't have any "special" or newer copy protection, since it's not a major studio release (Although anything is possible)...
**EDIT** Have either of you tried PLAYING the DVD, either on:
1) Your PC
or
2) A standalone player with PAL-playback ability?

I guess i was mistaken then! i'll go back and get the log that ripit4me generates.

my drive is currently flashed with rpc1 firmware, so it's region free, if that's what you're referring to. I've tried running brute-force mode in dvd decrypter, but it will come up with the same (or similar) errors, saying something about scsi status, which I think is interesting considering i have no scsi drives.
**EDIT** Have either of you tried PLAYING the DVD, either on:

yes, the dvd will play fine on my multi region standalone player.
However, it will not play in either media player classic, vlc, and in WMP it will play, but very slowly and with much pausing, and the audio is garbled. I should mention that whenever the computer tries to access the disc, the drive is constantly spinning up and slowing down. there is also a high pitched noise similar to the one you hear if you put your head behind an old television. this doesn't happen with any other dvd's or cd's in the same drive.

a high pitched noise similar to the one you hear if you put your head behind an old television.I hope you haven't done this too many times ;>}
If "brendan is dead" post back here stating the same errors, it's possible that:
1) There was a run of bad pressings
or
2) This title has the same (In violation of DVD Video standards) type of copy protection as the German release, "Das Parfum".

Well, although I'm not an expert, there doesn't seem to be anything unusual in the file structure - No duplicate .IFOs, as were noted regarding "Das Parfum".
With nothing else to go on (and no further posting from "brendan is dead"), I lean toward my earlier speculation that there was a run of bad pressings.
You might want to return it to the place of purchase in exchange for a new one...
**EDIT** I just noticed this in your earlier posting:DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.1.0 started! It is IMPERATIVE that you use DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4!

try it in a different drive if you can.
also try give it an error scan - it probably is a slightly off replication. it can be hard to tell sometimes because often they'll only fail on a couple of drives/players. others will fail on everything they're put in (but if this is the case the discs would have been recalled and you probably wouldn't have got a hold of it). try something like DVDinfoPro or Nero's CD/DVDspeed.

If this DVD is in PAL format, it will not play in a NTSC player. I have found that converting it using Blaze Media Pro will create a working NTSC copy, but the conversion takes a long time.
Mug Funky
4th April 2007, 02:25
there's better ways to do it :)
...stupid NTSC players. PAL land hasn't had this problem since the early '90s. everything here can play everything from everywhere. NTSC land is backward, which is bizarre because it's all made in China.
if i had to move to NTSC land, i'd be buying european stuff off ebay. most of it will run off 120/60 as well.

setarip_old: thanks for all the help you've given me. Unfortunately i ordered the dvd from the UK, and as i live in australia at the moment, it would be a big hassle to return it...
orion17: I've tried the dvd in my standalone player (which supports both NTSC and PAL, although i'm not sure on that) and it works fine. the only problems i'm having are when i try to play it on my computer, and when i try to decrypt using a ripping program (so i can convert the video and store it on my ipod).
mug funky: unfortunately i only have the one computer, with one dvd drive, at home. i'll see if i can try it on a friend's computer, but i think that the problem may lie elsewhere, after reading this:

@WaryWolf
Did you replace DVD Decrypter v.3.51 with v.3.54 (and changing it in the RipIt4Me "Preferences" as well) and try ripping it again?
By the way - Even if the information at the link you've provided is correct ("RipGuard" protected), the RipIt4Me "package" should be able to handle it.

hi, all.
i'm sorry for my absence. unfortunately i lent my copy to a friend that has a region free player, and haven't gotten it back yet. i'm tired of having to go over to his house to watch it, lol.
i can't say that i got the exact same errors as the person above...but they sure look the same.
and i do remember trying to "brute force" it, but got similar errors.
i was also using the most current versions of ripit4me and dvd decrypter.
i know that this didn't help anything, but i at least wanted to check in.
i really appreciate your help.

The last DVD Decrypter worked fine for me on this DVD set. The problem I am having is the DVD is flagged for 16:9 but plays 4:3 on my DVD player. It plays 16:9 on my computer though. Odd how that is.
