So im rendering a video in vegas and bout 45% of the way through my pc just shuts off....I've rendered bigger projects than this on my computer i doubt its my power supply and all my temperatures are stable and fine. I have no clue why its doing this its never done it before. I have a deadline i have to meet in the next day for this. PLEASE help!!

Hi!
1) Possibility of bad RAM - Run "MemTest" or similar
2) What makes you doubt it's your power supply?

in response to 2) I have run my computer way harder than rendering for longer...plus my psu is brand new and has more than enough power

I'm having the exact same problem right now.
I play counter-strike for an hour or so, or even 30 minutes, and suddenly, my laptop shuts down, or freezes with a wierd pattern on the screen. Same thing: it was working fine until some days ago, and since it happens more and more often.
I'm about to try changing my power supply (mine has an external box on the cable, like most laptops), but this is bugging me seriously (well, the computer in fact :o).
Edit: btw, "brand new" doesn't mean it isn't defective, does it happen since you actually changed your psu ? It seems logical, but a bit surprising indeed ...

Guad:
I am sorry to say this, but you really might be dealing with a bad PSU. Since you mentioned it just SHUTS OFF, I don't think it is RAM related. I would expect BSOD, a freeze (lockup) in such cases. If you have a deadline, you should probably get another PSU (borrowing?).
Anyway, MemTest help:

There is some discussion about Toshiba laptops possibly overheating (GPU?) going back to 2004 up to the present day.

BTW, have you ever seen/used anything like this?

Have you tried SpeedFan/whatever else for temperature monitoring?

maybe your motherboards chipset is over-heating or a stuck fan - happened to me before, was to much bother to replace the heatsink and fan, so got a new motherboard

Thx for the info jeffy, I've just installed mobilemeter (laptop is an Acer Aspire 3000 btw): the cpu is already 58°C, but it's only been running for like 20 minutes, and I've only opened firefox a couple of times, nothing else ...
The HDD went from 25 to 27°C just while writting this post .. lol.
(and the cpu just jumped to 59° ...).
I was suspecting something like this but I was really thinking: hell, why now and not before ? (Cpu=60°... still climbing xD).
Thx again for pointing me in the (obviously) right direction =) (61°C !)
Edit: ok, while playing the cpu climbs right up to ... 93°C ! >_<

Yeah, that's way too hot. Most computers will automatically shut off or reboot when overheated.

93C!!! holy hell! you definitely have a cooling problem there! "most" processors today are supposed to decrease their speed when they hit 80C to prevent you from going over that...the fact that you hit 93C is just not good! go out and get a zalman cooler or something for that beast and get some realllllllllly good thermal goo...i did that on my 3.2HT and i cant get it to run over 42C after 3 days of it pegged at 100% doing encodes.

morph166955, have you noticed by any chance he was speaking about a laptop? I might be mistaken, but I just think you meant a Zalman solution for desktop, didn't you? (clues: thermal paste, 42C)
If you really have 42C with 100% load on a laptop, then congratulations!
Therefore, the only suggestion I can have, is the one mentioned below, a laptop cooling pad.
Eg. http://zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=224&code=030
Otherwise, having the laptop checked if the fan is working okay and the inners are dust-free, might be good as well.

wow i have egg ALL OVER MY FACE NOW lol...oops. Either way, 93C for ANY computer is just too damn hot. my T7200 Core2Duo laptop pegged at 100% doesnt get over 68C when I do encodes and thats when its on my lap with the bottom air ports smothered by my sweats or w/e. cool that thing down!

Actually, for overheating problems, people have reported seeing some progress when hoovering inside the case and especially the ventilators.
For a laptop, I think I'll buy some of those specialized compressed air cans and blow all that dust out first before buying some thermal paste ...
@Guad: sorry if I sort of hijacked your thread, but did you actually find a solution to your problem ? Since you said your temperatures were fine, the only possible problem that was left was the PSU ... did you buy/borrow one ? Did it work ?

Well, I tried blowing all the dust out of my laptop, and holy grail believe me or not, it worked ! My temps went down from 75/80° (@ 0% cpu usage) to 55°. After 45 minutes of CPU burn-in, the temperature was somewhere around 65° (instead of 95° :/) ... much better if you ask me, and no more automagic poweroffs =)
