I live in the US. I bought some DVDs that were only released in Australia and New Zealand (R4). When I get them I want to encode them to xvid. I've searched the site all night for help. Can you give me some tips that I will need to follow so I can give my freind .avi's of the cartoons. I use AVIsynth along with VDUBMOD. I have never in my short encoding life have attempted this. To be honest I am not familliar with PAL and I have limited knowledge of proper encoding. Will this be a very hard thing to do? Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you have other ways than using vdubmod/avisynth please let me know. I just want to educate myself. Thanks in advance Doom9 help. TM

Is your friend going to play them on a dvd player or pc ?

If his dvd player and tv dont support PAL formats then you will need to do some sort of PAL > NTSC conversion.

If its just going to be played on a pc then it doesnt matter, you dont need to do anything differently in your encode process (ie dont change the format).

Yeah he will just play them on his pc. What you are saying is I don't need to do any fps conversion to convert the .vob to xvid?

Exactly :) I would also just use megui as it will use dgindex to correctly analyse the streams and give you superior options to deinterlace them if you want as well as denoising to help imrpove compressability.

Its up to you what you use to encode, but no frame rate adjustments or format conversions are needed. PAL has better resolution and better color anyway, its best to keep it :)

Fantastic!. Thanks for the input R3Z. If I remember when I get my dvds in and start working on them I'll update this thread. Again. Thanks =)
