as topic indicated, i was having the problem of cscript.exe crashing when trying to use WmCmd.vbs on vista. I installed the hotfix, but it didn't fix anything. still having the exact same problem. anyone know any tips/suggestions/fixes?
on a side note, I'm running 64bit Vista but installed WME9 32bit for more compatiblity. dunno if this has any bearing on my problem or not

Can you check if your wmenceng.dll and wmenc.exe match the dates and versions listed in the KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929182)?

yep they match. I checked that since it was listed on the page and everything appears to have been installed properly as far as i can tell, but still crashes.
in another post someone stated turning off DEP fixed the problem for them, but it didnt work for me.

Does cscript.exe crash even when you just run "cscript wmcmd.vbs" without any parameters?

Then it's likely to be a different problem than the one addressed by the hotfix. Can you try encoding just audio, then encoding just video? Does it happen with every source format? Does it happen with every output codec?

ok i'll have to get ahold of some diff video files, (all mine are xvid). do you have some recommendations of what diff types of sources i should try? i'm pretty sure i can find some old divx files around somewhere. does it support x264?

Its AVI input is DShow based. If you can decode it, you can encode it.
The best test would be to take some YV12 or I420 uncompressed AVI as source. If that works - your problem is most likely in your XviD decoder.
