Hello all. I recently replaced the DVD ROM drive on my computer, and it is not region free as my older one was. I read the "How to make your DVD-ROM region free" article from this website, and it sounds confusing. Is it as difficult as it sounds, or not? Has anyone already done this and could give me some pointers? What is the worst that could happen?

Hi!
If you only purchase and play DVDs of your own region (e.g. if you live in the U.S. and buy only Region 1 DVDs), you need not concern yourself with the pre-set limit of 5 region changes (including one for the initial setting).
Otherwise, do a Googlesearch for "Region free software", or similar...

Actually, I should have specified this: I use the drive to backup my DVDs.

My experience has been that if you are only ripping and not playing DVDs from other regions, you don't need to make it region free. If you want to make it region free, you will need to either follow the directions in the article you read or buy Slysoft's AnyDVD program, which will enable you to watch region coded DVDs with any player.
