View Full Version : h.264: lower quality than XviD at high bitrates?

Hi, everybody

I read recently in the forums that many h.264 encoders (x.264, Nero AVC) give lower quality than XviD at high bitrates.

So, could you please suggest some x.264 or Nero AVC settings to improve quality at high bitrate? Should I turn off deblocking filter, or, probably, use CQM?

Thanks in advance

That sort of blanket statement is exactly why I discourage people from summing up such things in one line. AVC mainly has issues with dust, fog, and fine grain. If you're anything like Sagittaire, that doesn't matter one bit, and thus AVC will always be much higher quality for you than ASP. If you're anything like HeadBangeR77, that's the most important part of the movie, and everything possible should be done to keep it. So "higher quality" depends entirely on who's watching it.

Anyway, this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=121304) has a lot of arguing over it and near the end, several very specific command-lines (which can be partially translated to Nero) to try out in order to maximize noise retention.

That's about the most useless forum post I ever read

Of course comparisons regarding the quality of video codecs (or yellow pigs, Ukranian videogames for that matter) are only reliable if they are conducted ceteris paribus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceteris_paribus)
