Hi everyone.
I have a few questions and hope you haven't already answered them thousand times :)
I have a DVD player which has the DivX logo and thus can play divx movies. Normally I just burn the file on CD and it works fine.
I tried the same with a DVD. Put several movies on it ... all in XviD format. But the player won't play back. Why is that? Where is the difference to the CD?
Another thing. I have some english episodes. All encoded with XviD. What do I need if I want to put all these episodes on a DVD with some additional subtitles?

DVD players have different DIVX supports: DIVX HD certified, DIVX Ultra home theater certified and DIVX home theater certified.

Hi!
Your player can likely play simple XviD files but probably cannot play those that include use of Qpel or GMC...

Maybe it was not clear enough. What I don't understand is that the same movie does work when I burn it on a CD but it doesn't work on DVD.

Maybe it was not clear enough. No, it wasn't ;>} - because your first sentence referred to DivX files, while the next one referred to XviD files.
It may be a limitation of your DVD player. I have a Philips DVP642/37 that plays such files from burned DVD media.
It's also possible that your player doesn't recognize either the DVD format (DVD+R or DVD-R) or the brand/"MID" (Manufacturer's Identification). To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model of standalone DVD player, as well as media compatibility, go to:

I know that the player can read the DVD format. I tried the DVD on three player which are all capable to decode DivX but neither of them were able to play the movie files from a DVD. Only CD with the SAME file worked!

I tried the DVD on three player1) Were they different brands? If not, try playing the burned DVD on another brand of player.
2) What error message(s) do the standlone players show?
3) Can you play the files from the burned DVD play on your PC?

Hi and welcome to the forum,
I am with Setarip_Old on that one.
Facts:
- Your dvd player plays pressed DVD (commercials)
- your dvd player has a divx logo and plays divx and xvid on CD
Correct?
Did you get infos regarding your player from dvdrhelp link?
If not, at least give the brand and model of your player so we can sort the different causes of problem ...

Some DVD players support DivX but...... I think if you want to watch your Xvid files on DVD, you can use some software to convert and burn Xvid files into DVD as DVD format.
such as: AVI to DVD converter
http://www.avi2divx.com/avi-pro.zip
I'm using it to convert avi files to DVD format directly, then watch.
Well, maybe put your computer nearby your TV and watch is another good idea :)

Not relevant to this thread, which is about avoiding conversion to DVD. Struck for rule 5.

Sorry to get back so late.
Here are the 3 dvd player where I tested the brand:
Panasonic DVD-S49
Yamaha DVD-S550
and one from MEDION
Some facts:
- I use Verbatim dvds with first class media id
- Dvd won't play on all the above mentioned players
- It IS readable on pc and it plays perfect
I have still the qeuestion if its even possible to burn DivX or XviD files as data on a DVD and then play with with a dvd player.

I have a Philips DVP642/37 that plays such files from burned DVD media.Additionally, there are MANY other brands of standalone DVD players that can play DivX and (some) XviD files directly from burned DVD media...
