Gents,
The subject line says it all. I like 1080p and all, but having some humming whirring fanning box in my living room just doesn't appeal to me. Can anyone brief me on the situation here? Are there devices that:
1/ Can play a LOT of formats (x264/avc/dvd/xvid) over network
2/ Can both be streamed to, and playback from network shares
3/ Perhaps has silent harddisks/dvd drives
4/ Will shut off such drives when not in use
5/ Doesn't have a fan, or if its not fanless, at least no fans that disturb the silence
6/ Has HDMI 1.2 at least, or HDMI 1.3 preferrably
7/ Digital audio out would be nice, analog outs for rear channels could be welcome.
8/ WiFi would be nice I guess, but not required. True HD bitrates don't fly (yet)
My first find is the Netgear EVA8000 - http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA8000.aspx?detail=Specifications - but I don't know if it is QUIET.
