Hi,
I want to compress a video with Xvid-64bit-codec and Virtualdub64. I'm on Windows Vista 64.
I've installed sourceforge Virtualdub64 and Koepi's -'bit Xvid codec, but when I want to choose the xvid codec, virtualdub doesn't permit that, it's not in the list of available codecs.
If someone could tell me what to do...

Thx

Koepi's build is 32bit. If you want to use it then you need to use a 32bit VDub build. For VDub 64bit, you need to install a 64bit Xvid codec. My 64bit installer installs both. 100% not tested under Vista though. Works fine under XP x64. A little out of date, but still possibly newer than Koepi's last 1.2 build.

Thank you I've installed it and everything's fine.
But I have a question : as the computing wordsize is twice bigger I had expected the process to be twice shorter on a 64-bit system than on a 32-bit one. But it's not, the number of fps is the same. Can you explain it ?

Double the word size does not equal double performance. If you put more wheels on a car it's not going to go faster.
A standard integer in a 64-bit system is still 32-bits. XMM and MMX registers are still 128 and 64 bits respectively. The only real advantage of 64-bit mode is 8 more general purpose registers and 8 more XMM registers (which aren't used by xvid). Disadvantages include longer instructions and greater restrictions on which XMM registers are non-volatile.

Hmm, I recall the 64bit build being faster, but that was under XP and I could be wrong. It was awhile ago.

What was your source though?

Thank you squid_80, it's a clear explanation and I think I understand.

i think 64-bit would not take much effect on the speed...

i've got a athlon 4000+ 64bit and i tried win xp 64edition and i just can advise everyone to never install this OS. It's horrible and you've got no preshares... it's just marketing...
i use win xp 32bit and linux 64bit but i just use the 64bit edition of linux because linux supports the 64bit correct and yoou got sometimes preshares... but windows is far away of a good 64bit support

i hope this'll help you...

What are preshares and why are they good?
