View Full Version : target size for dvd5 (plus separate problem)

DVD RB Pro I have...
CCE/sp2 1.00.1
Now...I have a huge problem. I ran a 31hour CCE3(4)pass
on a 7.8GB dvd9. I forced an AVISynth script on it...using 3 filters, tweak, limitedsharpenfaster & i think it was undot...the output size came to 3.6GB!!
This I don't understand...so my real question here is this.
IS there a permanent way I can fix it to 4.33GBs all the time? I know it is a 90% probability...and I have read the other threads...
so the sub-question is this...IF your solution which I hope I can use...does that specification matter IF I use CCE plain? meaning without filters vs. CCE passes with forced AVIsynth scripts? Because I am so lost as to why it came to 3.6gb...I waited and waited for this huge thing...and was so disappointed.
Please help guys...begging you.
The projects I am working on are in trying to improve upon original DVD9 quality of very old films...by using filters...and man, I lost 31 hours at least...
#2 question if I may...anyway to pause the CCE process? besides hit cancel and start over?

1. No one can answer your question without seeing your filters. It's very possible (actually very probable) that they are the reason for the undersizing. When you use filters -- you assume responsibility for the results of that use. You could very easily add a filter that blanks all the video and makes the output less than 1GB... but that clearly isn't a problem within DVD-RB.
2. You can stop during encoding and restart by going into 3 click mode and pushing the "REBUILD" button. You will be asked whether you want to start over or continue where you left off.
3. 31 Hours for a 3-4 pass encode? That's really slow. Do you have to shovel coal into the back of that computer to keep it running? ;) (Note: Or, of course, it's possible that the filters are the reason for the slow speed)

EDIT:
HERE was my complete script:
tweak(sat=1.1,cont=0.9,bright=1.0)
vaguedenoiser()
temporalcleaner() <---here i was recommended later to put (5,10) ?
limitedsharpenfaster()
that's it. did i forget something? yes...to load them in the script. LoadPlugin...etc. So is that also part of the reason why the Output was 3.6Gb instead of 4.3x?
I realise I take responsibility for using filters...BUT in the future if I wish to use filters like that again, is there ANY way possible for me to set a target sector before hand? or when is that process done? thanks alot in advance for a reply.
------------------
Also, I needed to update/upgrade a friend's CCE v.1.00.00.1 to 1.00.00.13 (sp2)...but the setup file asks for a setup file which is NO longer on the hard-drive. What do I do next?
---------
Oh yes, this is what I have brought to you...screenshots of original dvd9 on the left, and avi script editor on the right SS...using those filters I mentioned in THIS post. I was too stupid and forgot to load them in DVD-RB...
last question, are the above filters the best possible i can use to get the desired output as you see below...perhaps there is a better solution the experts can come up with....thanks

Can you post the preparation section of your log file?
Your results look pretty good, at least as stills. If they look as good in motion I say your doing a pretty good job, but I'm not a AVS filter expert.
Regardless of the undersizing, how does the resulting video look? Is that second shot from AVS or the final encode?

2nd screenshot is JUST a preview from a AVS script preview. End result from undersizing was terrible...so blurry.
My question also regarding filters listing in DVD-RB...
do I have to write lines for loading those filters? Because I have seen elsewhere people using that...so I do NOT know the full process yet...

What is the correct way to put filters into the AVI box in DVD-RB Pro?
for example...
3 filters
deen
limitedsharpenfaster
tweak
OPTION A:
Tweak(...)
Deen(...)
L..S...F(...)
OR OPTION B:
LoadPlugin(C:/programfiles/avisynth2.5/tweak.dll)
...LP for deen
...LP for LSF
tweak()
deen()
LSF()
OR OPTION C:
(a better way?)

1. You bitrate is too low to get good results on anything but the most simple/clean video. Even then I probably wouldn't call the results 'good' but possibly 'acceptable'.
With almost 3 and a half hours of video it would probably be best to split it over 2 DVDs or use a DL disc.
2. Your encoding times aren't extraordinarily bad. You are starting off with about 223 minutes of video. Your doing 4 passes with CCE, so that's almost 900 minutes. 2000 minutes encode time means your net speed is about .45 real time. That's not horrible considering you are running 3 filters.
Your rebuild and prepare times are quite high. That could be because it's a laptop with a slower drive, but it could also be due in part to heavy disc fragmentation. Defraging may help your speed, especially since you are doing everything on one hard drive.
3. I'm going to merge your other thread in here since they are closely related. In that post Option B is the 'safe' way and should always work. Option A could work too, if the filter .dlls are in you AVS/plugins directory AVS will automatically load them so you don't have to use LoadPlugin.

Okay first you need to remove those extra's, the movie itself is very long and to compress it with extras will be an overkill.
Then you need to add compression to your encode, i.e. use Lremovedust_YV12() filter. I use parameter (17,1). If you find the Lremovedust filter too tricky to work with (since its a combination of multiple filters), use only removegrain (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=79751)(mode=2). You need to anyway download the removegrain package as both filters require it.
CCE is not good with such low bitrates. But even after removing the extras your typical bitrates are around 2k, first preference should be procoder2(not free). If you cant/dont have procoder then you should try AutoQmat encoder and keep QmatOP as enabled while encoding.

It's possible that Avisynth could be the cause of undersizing...I've seen other say they are getting undersizing with ver 2.5.7.... and when going back to the ver that comes with DVD-RB (2.5.6.) the undersizing goes away.
I've also seen the under sizing be fixed by adding "CCEAQM=1" into the rebuilder.ini under [Options]
[Options]
Mode=1
OneClick=0
ReduceOpt=0
NoWarn=1
AdditionalOutput=1
CCEAQM=1
LogFile=1
QuEncHQ=1
EncoderMinimized=0
with this option on do 3 passes and you should hit your target sizing (after going back to AVISYNTH 2.5.6)

(((1))) I believe I have selected the option to keep only the menu and movie through DVD-RB. Someone I believe mentioned the movie was 223 minutes. It is actually 2hr58min13secons according to dvd9 playback...178mins.
(((2)))On your Lremovedust comment and filters, I had asked a help ? on a better way than my 4 filters used...and this was their answer:
tweak(sat=1.1,cont=0.9,bright=1.0)
fft3dfilter(sigma=1,plane=0,degrid=1.0)
limitedsharpenfaster(smode=4)
Knowing this as a better combination of filters (I haven't yet had a chance to try this combintion yet), would I still need Lremovedust, and if so, wouldn't that replace limited then?
(((3)))I'll try to get ProCoder soon. During my research of this topic of mine, I ran into several threads ProCoder vs. CCE and saw some valid arguments for both. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Ok, adding lines in rebuilder.ini should be done AFTER 1ST STEP FOR CCE? I mean, after analysing passes d2v etc etc...?
Because I was planning on adding TargetSector line to make sure end result was near 4.35gb
(my size would have been 2247000, if my calculations are right: converting 4.35gb into bytes, dividing by 1.015 dividing by 2024...)

No, close RB, edit your ini, reopen RB and start from scratch.
The options will be written to your ecl file at the end of prepare phase, if you start with the encoding phase your new settings will be ignored.
Same goes for filters by the way as they will be written to your avs files.

2nd screenshot is JUST a preview from a AVS script preview. End result from undersizing was terrible...so blurry.Are you using any matrices? They can cause blurriness. The bitrate your log shows is fairly low also...
Also -- you can save yourself a lot of time when using filters by allowing DVD-RB to do a couple of the segments and then stopping encoding. You can then look at the quality of the M2V files and decide whether to continue or change and start over. If you wait 31 hours for each run to see how it looks you may find yourself old and grizzled before you're done.

That's another thing. I haven't even looked at the matrices option in DVD-RB. I've only been using CCE since January...before just did the straightforward 4pass or even up to the ridiculous 10 passes. Recently I have gotten into using filters by using DVD9 folders and making a 2CD rip and the filters work fine there. Then I asked around about using those same filters in DVD-RB...so this is where I am.
From now on, I see I have to use the 3-step process...not one-click and go. Mr. Dobbs, you say allow DVDRB do a couple of segments...this happens in 2nd phase, I believe. So I will then play the M2V files in VLC and look at quality...
To get the post #12 correctly understood...I have to do this first.
Close DVD-RB...edit the r...ini file and put in the following:
TargetSector line
then somewhere I guess i will find the AVI section and put the filters there?...as well as in DVD-RB in script box dialogue. ok, another question then...does it HELP DVD-RB, if i also add lines to Load the Plugins for filters I am using?...meaning does it make encoding faster, or should i just leave them alone. Also reading up on other posts here, putting in blank lines is a bad thing...right? so i cannot separate the LoadPlugins lines & filters with a blank line....
As for blurriness, should I just turn OFF matrices? plus, wouldn't even know where to look to check for matrices...yes, still new at this.
I will also guess that using OPV will NOT allow filters to come in the process...correct? I must do 3 passes or so...for filters to also be used...
THANK YOU SO MUCH Mr. Dobbs & others for your help...this is teaching me alot, and I appreciate it.
(On a side note, I wish to donate for your newest version of DVD-RB, but no credit card / paypal acct due to VERY BAD credit history when i was a college student...there has to be some way i can send a money order or something...i'm in los angeles)

Otherwise you would need to change every avs file in the working dir.
ok, another question then...does it HELP DVD-RB, if i also add lines to Load the Plugins for filters I am using?...meaning does it make encoding faster, or should i just leave them alone.
If you have your filter dlls in the default Avisynth plugins folder which is D:\Program files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins then there's no need to have the LoadPlugin first.
IMHO it has no speed effects.
Also reading up on other posts here, putting in blank lines is a bad thing...right? so i cannot separate the LoadPlugins lines & filters with a blank line....
Never heard of this before, in my opinion you can.
As for blurriness, should I just turn OFF matrices? plus, wouldn't even know where to look to check for matrices...yes, still new at this.
Leave the matrices alone, otherwise you have an additional source beside your filters why you don't reach your preferred target size.
But I recommend you follow Fishman's advice and add the CCEAQM=1 line. Edit: And more important deinstall AviSynth 2.5.7 and install 2.5.6a (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57023&package_id=72557&release_id=366697)!
I will also guess that using OPV will NOT allow filters to come in the process...correct? I must do 3 passes or so...for filters to also be used...
Wrong, you can use filters with OPV as well.
But it is not recommended if you want to reach an exact target size!

If you want to change your filters do it inside Settings => Options => Filter editor.
Otherwise you would need to change every avs file in the working dir.
But remember if you change what is in the DVD-RB Filter Editor box you have to re-run the Prepare step in order to apply those changes.
If you're just testing out filters you can edit the first few AVS files directly, run the Encode step and say No to resuming, then check the resulting .mpv files. Repeat until you find the right combination and then put it in the Filter Editor and run Prepare to apply it to all the segments.

I can only say resizing under DVD-RB is a bad Idea since RB will re-create the whole dvd in the rebuild phase picking up the resolution details from the IFO (I think it copies them directly), wherein you have manually changed the size using avisynth....its a screwup!!!
Why dont you try using the basic filter first to gain compression and then graduate to the others.
jdobbs
21st March 2007, 16:27
I would definitely not recommend resizing as a filter when using DVD-RB unless the final result matches that of the source. You will almost always run into problems. As techreactor mentioned -- the IFO files have to match the VOBs.

If you're planning to play it back as a DVD you are limited to (NTSC):
720x480, 704x480, 352x480 (Half-D1), or 352x240 (SIF). You can select Half-D1 in DVD-RB and it will do it for you. You will often find that MPEG-2 encoders will only accept those standard resolutions. You can sometimes get away with 480x480 (SVCD) on players that support super video cd, but it is very definitely outside the DVD standard.
EuropeanMan
21st March 2007, 23:26
Ok, let me try to explain this to myself...being a virgin to this whole process (only started serious ripping in jan'07).
NTSC has rules...720x480...704x480 & HD1 & SIF. Okay, this particualar movie was 4:3 & probably 640x480? (something like that, letterboxed, NOT anamorphic).
When I run the AVI Scripts thru MeGui, I can do a bit of cropping to bring the edges just a bit...but that's besides the point.
What I am afraid of is this. One stupid DVD manufacturer has a logo that appears in the top right corner of the frame. 2/3 in the frame, 1/3 above the frame. When I use these filters or without, does the CCE encoding take THAT little piece in account as well? Why I am asking is this...a friend told me that when cropping to a 2CD rip in MeGui (for example), it is much better to elimate the bars on all 4 sides. Anything with a black border will NOT give you the best quality.
And I really want to get the best quality...I'll do my CCE 3-pass with 2 filters (no Lanzcos line)...and will present results tomorrow. I appreciate everyone's time & effort here. I've learned so much already...thanks again. - Farooq
jdobbs

Did it come from a DVD? If so, it could not have possibly been 640x480. It was probably 720x480. Even if it is 4:3 -- the horizontal resolution stays the same, the pixels are just stretched differently on playback if it is 4:3 or 16:9. But the resolution doesn't change. I think you may be think in terms of 1:1 pixel aspect ratios. DVDs don't typically playback 1:1.

No, if the source is a dvd it is 720x480 or 704x480.

You're mixing things up, this is MPEG4 and not MPEG2 which is more restricted.
What I am afraid of is this. One stupid DVD manufacturer has a logo that appears in the top right corner of the frame. 2/3 in the frame, 1/3 above the frame. When I use these filters or without, does the CCE encoding take THAT little piece in account as well?

----
When I originally ran my CCE 4 pass on that movie...I had used those filters...and making a long story short...I used the 4 original filters.
When I opened my rebuilder.ini file, those filters were there. I had wanted to follow instructions in a prior post here...and I added the CCEAEQ line (might be misspelled) & also the CCETargetSectors line...and then I ran an OPV on a separate movie (beforehand, I removed the filters from Filter Dialogue Box in dVD-RB & turned off forced-encoding w/ filters)...movie came out to 4.18GB! I don't get it. This was a simple OPV...nothing else. Original DVD9 was 6.06gb. When I played the movie was fine...not great, but not terrible either...oh yes, output was ISO file. When unpacked still 4.18gb. This is when I reopened rebuilder.ini and the 2 lines I added were still there. Also the 4 original filters. Why? I thought when DVD-RB ran a new CCE it would clean that stuff out automatically?
---- And now, running the OPV again on 6.06GB movie again! This time, taking out the 4 filter lines in rebuilder.ini...hopefully can get it closer to 4.35GB! grrrrr

I doubt that it's 704x480... 720x480 is much more likely.

You may be right...SS posted here was 725x480...I forgot to crop that little border to the right...the blue.
Anyway...I just ran the OPV on 2nd movie, and STILL it came to 4.18...I have NO idea why! This is so bloody frustrating. Why can't I get a 6.06GB to 4.35GB or even close to it? GRrrrrrrrrrr.
And I don't have ProCoder yet...and grr...........what am I going to do?>

Because you are using OPV. The granularity is limited. You may increase the Q value by 1 tick and go oversized, go one click back and you're at 4.18GB. It's the nature of the beast. You have to decide to either live with it or do multiple passes. You also seem to be obsessing about a small amount of space... the extra .13GB isn't really going to make a whole lot of difference anyway.

OPV doesnt get you the desired target size.....period.....I have struggled with it, tried to optimize it, but no success, thats the way it works.
Best to use multiple passes for better quality and sizing. 6.06 to 4.37 (DVD5) is a very decent reduction. You might want to use HCenc, it will give you good results, no doubts.

I ended up using CCE to look at the results. The filters worked fine...but somehow, the picture aspect ratio is wrong I guess.
crop( 6, 70, -6, -74)
fft3dfilter(sigma=1,plane=0,degrid=1.0)
limitedsharpenfaster(smode=4)
That is what I used in the filter dialogue box...obviously wherever I cropped the picture got stretched to the original size..I cut more on the top/bottom so now vertically it looks a bit stretched. Any possible way I can fix this? - thanks.

There are probably no answers cause this was mentioned before, starting from here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=973356#post973356), don't change the resolution!
If you crop you have to add borders too.

as Rippraff said, when u crop the source, u have to add borders and resize it again.

Here is a continuation of oversizing problem now...
Here is my AviSynth script I put in DVD-Rebuilder...
SetMemoryMax(1024)
MT("LimitedSharpenFaster(ss_x=1.0, ss_y=1.0, Smode=4, strength=150, overshoot=1)",3)
I set this for One-Pass VBR, Movie ONLY, .ISO output keeping the DVD files...from a nearly 7.3GB dvd9 fileset, I got an output of 5.69GB. Why is this? Here are my log files:

Did you just follow one single advice people gave you here? :rolleyes:
- DVD-RB v1.20.4
- AVISYNTH 2.5.7.0
- CCE 1.0.0.4 encoder selected.
- AVS Filters are enabled.
- "One Pass VBR (w/analysis)" mode is enabled.
You're still using v1.20.4.
There are six newer versions in the meantime.
If you're a registered user please upgrade first to the current one. If not, well...
You're still using AVISYNTH 2.5.7.0.
And if you want to reach an exact target size don't use OPV, this was mentioned as well.
Giving up and going to unsubscribe this thread.

Oh man...totally forgot about OPV...yes, my fault. I did earlier NOT use the OPV and target size worked...this totally slipped my mind. Sorry.
