View Full Version : Chapter Menu: Own Sound for Each Chapter Button?

I'm going to authorize my favorite musicle "Jesus Christ Superstar". I have an idea that, when a mouse is over a chapter button, the background sound in the chapter menu should be changed (aside from the usual button highlighting). ATM, it's just an idea and, thus, i'd like to ask DVD-guru's
i) whether it's principally possible
ii) and, if yes, about some concepts to realize it
iii) and what software (freeware is definitely better) is more suitable for such a task...
Thanks.
PS. I have a certain experience with GUI_DVDAuthor, PGCEdit, IFOEdit, etc.

Quick answer - Yes.
How? Every "button" has its own menu, with corresponding audio that is accessed by the button over. What the button over does is jump to that particular menu automatically. The two menus have basically the same still picture, so it can look somewhat seamless. Just remember that menus can only have one audio track.
Freeware? I have no idea what freeware program could begin to do this. This is usually the domain of higher end packages.

1. you can use MuxMan to create the menu pages, one for each chapter, as slk001 said. you can use the same picture or video as a background for those chapters that appear on the same 'page'. alternatively, you can use different backgrounds for each button, e.g. the selected button can be in color, whilte the others are black & white, or the selected button can be in motion, while the others are still, or a combination of these. add different audio for each button's page. note that if you create a motion menu, the video will restart every time you highlight another button. a nice guide how to create/change menus using MuxMan: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=99306
2. in PgcEdit set each button's command to link the pgc with the appropriate audio (the menu page for the given button), and check 'Auto Activate'.
2b. you can copy-paste the menu functions in PgcEdit's Menu Editor using Edit -> Copy/Paste whole menu, or File -> Export/Import whole menu functions, and applying the differences.
3. each button's page should have a pre-command that highlights the given button.
4. on each button's own page the given button should have the command to access the given chapter, and that button should not be 'Auto Activate'
this way whenever you highlight a menu button, it will automatically send you to the button's pgc, with the audio referring to the selected button, and on that page when you press the button, it will do what the button's supposed to do.
note that this will work on standalone players, but some software players (namely PowerDVD 5, might be others, too) will not use auto activate when highlighted by the cursor, only when accessed by the arrow buttons, thus the mouse over method will not work, moreover, you will have to click twice for the button to work (the first click will take you to the buttons page, and the second click will do what the button's supposed to).
5. in this scenario you can avoid double clicking by putting buttons that jump to the chapter, over the 'go-to-buttons-pgc' buttons. still, when there are overlaying buttons, some software players select the button that is of higher number, and some of the lower number, so if you want to be absolutely sure that the user doesn't have to click twice, you have to sandwich those 'go-to-buttons-pgc' buttons between two regular 'go-to-chapter' buttons, one of a higher and one of a lower number.

The menu in "Fearless" has the same principle in the chapter select menu(although the sound doesn't change), where when you select a button the image displaying a still changes. I found that when playing the DVD on a stand-a-lone that it was a bit sluggish(even worse with a backup).

@NuPogodi - let me know the results. one likes a tap on the back once typed that much. :)Briefly, it works... of cause, when i highlight autobuttons by arrows in software DVD players (e.g. FullScreenPlayer). Highlighting autobuttons by a mouse just highlights those, but does not result in jumps to another menu (exactly what you have suggested).
Some details (if needed):
1. DVDAuthorGUI -> VOBs + IFOs
2. PGCEdit -> to set some buttons autoactive
3. the most difficult task was to find software DVD player which may let me navigate with "arrow"-keys (most of them allocate "arrows" for other tasks, i.e to set sound volume, etc.)
The last, but not the least = :thanks:
[EDIT] I did not yet test whether it works in hardware DVD players.
