x264 works as a command line but I believe ND should be much more faster deleviring better quality for they were the one to introduce this AVC....
Ok..Which is a better one for high quality rips?

Your analysis is very scientific. And your last question just builds on your analysis.

What a nonsense, lol.
There have been so many topics around here about this, you'll have to learn to look further than that from now on :)
Nero can't be as good as a well-tuned x264 encode because nero doesn't have half of x264's "special" features (and they do make a whole lot of a difference). Nero's psychovisual enhancements aren't bad though.
I'll give you a hint: if you want it done fast, use nero.
If you want "ultra-dupa-high-quality", you'll have to get reading around the forum a bit :)
What format _precisely_ do you plan encoding to ? avc+vorbis in ogm ? mkv ? avc+aac in mp4 ? avc+mp3 in mp4 ? There are so many tools out there that use x264 ... all depends on what you're trying to do :)

Well in fact Nero is simply a gui for the Ateme AVC codec like MeGui is a gui for the x264 codec.
But in fact Ateme AVC codec have really complete setting:
- Adaptative Quantisation (really better than x264)
- weighted prediction (really better than x264)
- Interlacing mode (really better than x264)
- Custom Quantisation Matrix
- Adaptative Deblocking Matrix
- Lossless mode
- Film Grain Modeling mode

Thanks I would go the Nero way.... Just a reminder... Ateme AVC Codec was the winner in Doom9's comparison tests.... Furthur more...it is also supported by many Standaones out there...

avc = avc. it doesnt matter for a standalone whether it has been created by nero or x264 as long as the features are used the standalone supports

Ateme AVC Codec was the winner in Doom9's comparison Yes, in 2004 codec shootout, but in 2005 x264 is winner over Ateme HP.

Yes, in 2004 codec shootout, but in 2005 x264 is winner over Ateme HP.IIRC barely based on one scene (could have been the other way also)
Anyway it's 2007 now. I suggest people do their own comparisons and see which gives better results for them.

well, for me x264 are the best for now and is free/open source.
Its true that Atame or mainconcept have improved their codec a lot of in the last year and this is a good things.
I think same, 2007 are here, and the best are make owner test.

I agree with you. For my eyes that is Elecard/Mainconcept :)

I'm using Nero Recode 2.4.5.0 and coudn't find Custom Quantisation Matrix and Film Grain Modeling mode. Pls, point me to right option!

Simply because Nero Gui don't use these options ...

^ So is there any other gui, commercially available, which can use these Ateme h264 cli options.
@JohnV
When will we see those implementation in Nero Recode gui?!

Yeah, your time vs quality. For me, I'll get it done quick with Nero and perhaps have files that are 5% bigger for the same quality as X264. My time is too precious. Same argument applies to old rip+encode vs just rip+buy bigger hard drive.

What I've meant future nero digital avc standalones.
Anyway, I've found some information:
• MPEG-4.10 (H.264) BP@L3, MP@L4.0* and HP@L4.0*
Taken from Sigma Designs SMP8630 Series Product Brochure (http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/Products/SMP8630/pdf_files/SMP8634_br.pdf)
Also see this (http://www.nero.com/eng/showpress.php?id=1023)

Yes... There are quite a number of AVC standalones... Check Nero's website..
Also, for some advanced tweaking with Nero AVC, edit the XML file.. Now you could have as much as control with Nero AVC as with x264... Even add Custom Matrices.. Now, you could even do a Nero AVC Encode with EQM Matrices...
Check this for more info: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123624

Not true. Ateme has off line PC encoder as a standalone aplication. It offers much more than Nero Recode, but the price is about 10K Euro.

I'm using nero avc because it is faster and easier than x264 and get a similar output file
